Position Summary The City of Portland's Bureau of Parks and Recreation is accepting applications for the Recreation Leader – Instructor role. This position is an integral part of service support and delivery in programs and facilities citywide. The Recreation Division seeks qualified candidates to provide instruction in general recreation programs and various program areas.

Job Appointment Full Time, Regular Work Schedule: Monday through Friday (subject to change) Work Location: Fully in person, employee will report to Peninsula Park Community Center. Remote work must be performed within Oregon or Washington.

Responsibilities

Facilitate, instruct, and support the administration of a wide variety of recreation classes and programs, including after‑school programs.

Adapt to changing priorities while effectively managing assigned responsibilities.

Plan and deliver front‑line instruction, including leading and training recreation support staff and volunteers.

Operate, maintain, and organize program supplies and equipment.

Work directly with the public by providing quality instruction, ensuring the safe use of facilities, and responding to questions and inquiries.

Perform administrative and registration tasks to support program operations and meet participant needs.

Qualifications

Knowledge of general or specialized recreational programs, services and activities.

Ability and experience establishing and executing lesson plans and instructing in general or specialized recreational programs, services or activities.

Experience leading and supporting others through the delivery of programs and classes.

Ability to select, instruct, and oversee volunteers and seasonal/casual staff.

Ability to follow written and oral instructions as well as communicate with internal and external customers from different socioeconomic backgrounds and abilities.

Additional evaluation may occur before establishing the eligible list.

Step 3: Establishment of Eligible List (Week of January 19 2026)

Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on an equally ranked eligible list.

Step 4: Selection (Interview) – February 2026 Step 5: Offer of Employment – February 2026 Step 6: Start Date – Early/Mid/Late Month

Start date determined after all conditions of employment have been met.
