Job Summary: Under the immediate supervision of the Facility Manager and Boat Manager, the Boat Guard performs various duties, including preparing the Glencoe Boat House for the customers' demands at the Beach and assisting with the daily Boat operations. They work in groups of a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 8 boat guards. They are part‑time employees working from 2 to 30 hours a week. Work is performed at a self‑controlled pace but may vary depending on the job's demands.
The Boat Guard is required to participate in a 15‑minute daily training session to demonstrate knowledge or ability to perform work activities. This can be verbal or physical and covers all aspects of the described essential functions.
Qualifications:
Must be at least 16 years old or older.
Must possess a Lifeguard Certification or willing to obtain before their first shift.
Must possess a valid IL Boating Licenses within the hiring date and have a good driving record.
Must pass the Glencoe Park District Boat Training.
Must pass Glencoe Park District Vehicle Training.
All employees must pass a StarGuard Elite Lifeguard Certification class, which the Glencoe Park District will facilitate through preseason training and cover.
All employees must pass a criminal background check, which the Glencoe Park District will cover.
Required Knowledge:
Knowledge of the philosophy of public recreation and the ability to effectively communicate it to others
Proven technical understanding of the position’s content
Required Skills:
Dependable and flexible, with strong safety awareness and sound judgment
Ability to understand and follow rules and instructions
Ability to read, write, and organize materials
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist with opening and closing duties, including cleaning the facility.
Complete and log high‑frequency inspections.
Monitor boat operations & make appropriate assistance in approved boat.
Be proficient in boat safety and matters dealing with assistance situations.
Maintain, inspect, and regularly test life‑saving, rescue, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Advise the Boat Supervisor and/or Facilities Manager on personnel, safety, and equipment‑related matters.
Assist boaters in moving watercraft into the water.
Provide surveillance for crafts on the water.
All surveillance, dispatch, and accident reports must be filled out and tracked daily.
Provide excellent customer service to all patrons and staff.
Assist in set up and organization of Boat Services.
Field and answer patron questions to the best of their ability.
Participate in community activities such as 4th of July.
Responsible for the safety of the general public at the facility.
May have to work under stressful situations.
Must be able to make decisions to assure safety in the boating area.
Must use good safety awareness and judgement.
Must be capable of implementing the emergency action plan and communicating emergency directions.
Must be able to give directions to co‑workers and follow directions from supervisors and co‑workers as well.
Hours: Due to the nature of Park District programming, evening, weekend, and some holiday hours are to be expected.
The Boat Manager or Facility Manager might also direct the boat guard to perform other assignments not included in this job description, which is subject to periodic review and revision.
