Position Purpose Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, the Paraeducator assists certified professional staff with students in the classroom to meet instructional goals and behavioral objectives.
Essential Job Functions
Assist instructional personnel in the education, training, and supervision of students with autism.
Apply strategies and techniques to foster independence, self‑reliance, and social skills.
Assist instructional personnel with the delivery of lesson plans, presentation of learning materials, and conduct of instructional exercises.
Monitor students’ progress regarding individual educational plans and goals.
Monitor and assist individual students and/or small groups of students with autism in a variety of instructional activities after lessons, using positive reinforcement and appropriate behavior strategies.
Assist in a variety of instructional materials and learning aids geared to the instruction level of children with autism.
Monitor students during classroom activities, recesses, and field trips.
Operate and assist students in the operation of instructional aids, media, and computer‑assisted instructional equipment.
Assist in maintaining an orderly, safe, and positive learning environment.
Depending on students' needs, assist with basic personal care activities such as dressing, toileting (including catheterization), feeding, and grooming.
Use good judgment to assist injured or physically ill students and to respond to medical emergencies.
Assist students on and off the bus as needed.
Assist in administering a variety of tests and record results.
Attend specialized training as required.

Equipment Use standard office equipment such as personal computers and copiers; use medical and instructional devices as needed by students.
Travel Requirements Travel between schools or between schools and offices may be required for certain positions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to carry out instructions in written or oral form.
Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations.
Ability to understand, apply, and use personal computers and software (e.g., Word, Excel).
Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding students, employees, and others.
Ability to establish a supportive relationship with students with special needs.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others.
Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards Works in standard office and school building environments; may work outdoors during student activities.
Qualifications Profile High school diploma or equivalent AND successful completion of college‑level coursework (60 credit hours) OR passing of the ParaPro Assessment.
Temporary Position YES – All temporary positions will end on June 30th.
Number of Months/Days 10 months – 185 days; months/days will be pro‑rated to start date.
Full Time or Part Time Full Time.
Eligible for State Share of Benefits Yes.
Pension Eligible Position Yes.
Minimum Qualifications Paraeducator Certification.
NOTE: A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required for all employees of the Seaford School District.

Special Conditions of Employment All new state employees must participate in the State of Delaware's Direct Deposit system. Candidates must have a satisfactory criminal background check, child protection registry check, and documentation of Mantoux skin test results. The cost of the criminal background check is $65. Final candidates must also receive a satisfactory child protection registry check. The State of Delaware has a lag pay policy; new employees will receive the first paycheck at the end of the second pay period of work.
