Position Type : Full Time

Mechanical Design Engineer I is an entry-level role responsible for assisting in the design and development of mechanical systems for buildings, including HVAC, plumbing, and utility-related components. Working as part of the firm’s mechanical engineering department, this role supports senior engineers in producing accurate, code-compliant construction documents and technical drawings. The position provides exposure to multidisciplinary collaboration, ensuring mechanical designs align with architectural and structural requirements while meeting project schedules and regulatory standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Assist in the preparation of mechanical design plans (HVAC, plumbing, and related systems) for commercial, residential, and mixed-use buildings.

Develop CAD drawings and technical documentation for mechanical construction plans in compliance with company and industry standards.

Support senior engineers in performing load calculations, energy analysis, and system sizing.

Collaborate with architects, structural engineers, and project managers to coordinate building system designs.

Review and apply local, state, and national building codes and standards to system design.

Participate in design meetings to address coordination issues and ensure integration of mechanical systems with overall building plans.

Contribute to permit submittals and address plan review comments with guidance from senior staff.

Assist with construction support activities, including responding to Requests for Information (RFIs), reviewing submittals, and participating in site visits.

Maintain accurate and organized design files, project records, and compliance documentation.

Provide technical support to senior engineers in resolving design challenges and coordination issues.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit, or similar platforms).

Basic understanding of HVAC, plumbing, and utility system design principles.

Familiarity with building codes (e.g., International Mechanical Code, International Plumbing Code, ASHRAE standards).

Strong problem-solving skills with attention to accuracy and detail.

Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to collaborate across multiple disciplines in a project team setting.

Eagerness to learn and apply mechanical design concepts in a professional environment.

Internship, co-op, or project-based experience in building mechanical design preferred.

Competencies 1. Technical Design Proficiency

Produces accurate HVAC and plumbing plans in AutoCAD/Revit that meet drafting and company standards with minimal revisions.

Applies system-sizing calculations (loads, duct sizing, pipe routing) correctly in design work.

2. Problem-Solving and Analytical Thinking

Identifies coordination conflicts (e.g., ductwork vs. structural beams) early and suggests practical routing alternatives.

Uses design software outputs and engineering data to justify design recommendations.

3. Attention to Detail

Consistently checks drawings for alignment with architectural plans, mechanical codes, and project specifications.

Ensures schedules (equipment, fixtures, piping) are accurate and complete before submittal.

4. Collaboration and Teamwork

Works effectively with architects, structural engineers, and project managers to coordinate design solutions.

Contributes constructively in project meetings to resolve conflicts between mechanical systems and other disciplines.

5. Communication Skills

Prepares clear mechanical design notes and documentation for contractors, permitting authorities, and clients.

Explains mechanical design decisions to non-technical team members in straightforward terms.

6. Learning Agility

Actively seeks feedback from senior mechanical engineers and incorporates lessons into future design tasks.

Demonstrates progress by independently applying knowledge of new codes, standards, or software tools.

7. Innovation and Creativity

Suggests design alternatives that improve system efficiency, reduce energy use, or streamline installation.

Applies innovative layout strategies to resolve space-constrained mechanical system designs.

8. Time and Project Management

Consistently completes assigned design deliverables on schedule to support project deadlines.

Prioritizes workload effectively when balancing multiple active projects.

9. Quality and Compliance Orientation

Ensures designs comply with building codes (IMC, IPC, ASHRAE, NFPA) and project specifications.

Participates in internal quality reviews and incorporates redlines promptly.

10. Hands-On Application and Field Support

Assists with site visits to confirm mechanical design intent during construction.

Documents field observations accurately and communicates recommended design adjustments.
