The Workers’ Compensation Unit in the Civil Litigation and Employment Section of the Colorado Attorney General’s Office seeks an experienced Paralegal to join its team. The Unit represents state agencies and higher‑education institutions in workers’ compensation matters, managing litigation from inception through hearings and appeals. The Paralegal will support attorneys in opening claims, gathering information, investigating claims, drafting motions and pleadings, filing pleadings, reviewing and organizing records, conducting preliminary research, and coordinating witnesses and exhibits for hearings.

Sign‑on bonus:

New hires eligible for a $1,000 bonus—$500 at hire and $500 upon certification (12 months after hire).

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Assist attorneys in defending workers’ compensation claims.

Open and manage claims, gather pertinent information, and draft necessary legal documents.

File pleadings and discoveries with the Division of Workers’ Compensation, Office of Administrative Courts, or relevant courts.

Organize, summarize records, and facilitate trial preparation including witnesses and exhibits.

Stay current on procedural rules and case law and submit data to improve unit effectiveness.

Perform additional assignments as needed.

Salary note:

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act and paid biweekly.

Residency Requirement Only residents of the State of Colorado at the time of application are eligible.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Paralegal certificate from an ABA‑approved program or accredited institution.

One year of paralegal experience.

SUBSTITUTIONS

Two years of paralegal experience in legal research, drafting, and data compilation can substitute for the certificate.

A JD from an accredited law school also substitutes for the certificate.

Transcripts are required for substitution qualifications.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Recent experience supporting attorneys in workers’ compensation.

Proficiency in organizing electronic medical records.

Experience with ProLaw or a similar case management system.

Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with hard deadlines.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Pass a thorough background investigation before appointment.

Flexible work arrangements are allowed after successful onboarding; new hires must work in‑office.

Colorado Department of Law participates in E‑Verify and will provide the federal government with Form I‑9 information.
