Job Summary The Registrar I position is responsible for the registration of patients, including patient interviews, updating hospital computers, obtaining consent, and ensuring information accuracy. The role supports patient flow and collaborates closely with departmental staff, physician offices, and nursing units.
Responsibilities
Interview patients in person or by phone to obtain all required information for hospital records and billing systems.
Register or pre-register all scheduled patients for admission, partial hospitalization, and outpatient services according to department policies and procedures.
Obtain bed assignments and follow up with the nursing station to keep patients and families informed of bed availability.
Secure patient and/or responsible party signatures on registration documents and provide required information concerning Advanced Directives, Privacy, Ethnicity, Medicare, Medi‑Cal, and Tricare.
Verify insurance coverage and obtain authorization for services that require pre‑certification; take appropriate steps if authorization is unavailable.
Prepare charts and paperwork for patient visits, place identification wristband, and follow SRH procedures for patient identification.
Determine upfront payment or deposit based on third‑party coverage and collect payment according to SRH scripting for POS collections; log payment, produce receipts, and prepare deposit records.
Screen patients for Medi‑Cal or hospital‑sponsored financial programs and provide appropriate documentation and referral; explain payment options and enroll in plans as needed.
Collect and disburse valuables and envelopes after determining patient or family identification.
Perform clerical functions such as answering phones, taking messages, chart processing, filing, and faxing; assist patients with questions regarding hospital bills and payments.
Maintain confidentiality of information in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
Comply with department policy and procedure for registration quality, including timely correction and/or leader notification.
Demonstrate appropriate problem‑solving and interpersonal skills.
Promote a positive hospital image to patients, visitors, and physicians by adhering to SRH Core Values of Service, Partnership, Community, Compassion, and Excellence.
Other Duties Maintain a clean, neat, and orderly work area; work safely at all times; assist with patient transport as needed; communicate effectively with patients of all ages and cultural backgrounds; perform additional duties as assigned by Manager, Supervisor, or Lead.
Required Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent preferred; one‑year hospital registration or relevant experience required.
Knowledge of medical insurance (Medicare, Medi‑Cal, HMOs, PPOs, commercial), EMTALA, and HIPAA regulations.
Basic computer skills (word processing, e‑mail, and internet).
Bilingual language competency in Spanish or Tagalog preferred.
