Job Summary Registered Nurses on the 3 Main Adult Medicine Services (Acute and Progressive) at UK Good Samaritan Hospital provide care for adult patients who are moderately stable, have fluctuating acuity, and require comprehensive care. The unit offers more intensive monitoring, including progressive care, telemetry, and medical/surgical support, and the RN serves as a vital component of the interdisciplinary progressive care team.

Responsibilities

Provide total, comprehensive, continuous and patient‑centered care: assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing plan of care.

Deliver direct patient care, ensure patient satisfaction, train and delegate duties for Nursing Care Technicians (Nursing Assistant), and adhere to university policies, state, federal, and local regulations.

Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to monitor patients’ physiologic conditions, perform frequent treatments as ordered, and facilitate safe transitions from intensive to progressive/acute care.

Qualifications

Required Education:

Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Preferred Education/Experience:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) plus at least one year of RN experience.

Required License/Registration/Certification:

Active Kentucky Registered Nurse (RN) license, Temporary Work Permit (TWP), Provisional License, or active compact state RN license in good standing, and American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support certification valid for at least 6 months after employment date.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull 50–100 pounds daily and 25–50 pounds frequently; stand, walk, and sit for long periods; and tolerate exposure to communicable diseases, radiation hazards, and injury from intractable patients or sharp instruments.

Shift Requirements:

Must work two 12‑hour shifts per week on Saturdays and Sundays, with occasional holidays.

Supervisory Responsibility:

None.

Skills & Knowledge

Knowledge of Maslow’s eight Basic Human Needs, Gordon’s Functional Health Patterns Framework, and Swanson’s Caring model.

Excellent direct patient care and critical thinking skills.

Basic computer navigation skills and working knowledge of the internet.

Effective communication in a professional and respectful manner with patients, families, coworkers, and physicians.

Strong organizational, prioritization, and delegation abilities.

Motivation, pro‑activity, confidence in patient advocacy, and ability to work independently and in a team.
