Summary Develops, implements, supervises, and evaluates agency goals and objectives, overseeing staff within the Marine Fisheries Division. Manages all aspects of statewide programs dedicated to monitoring, conserving, and restoring the state's marine, anadromous, and invertebrate resources to ensure sustainable use and ecological health.

Your Experience Counts Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree and 4.5 years of experience OR equivalent combination of 8.5 years of education and experience after completion of high school education and experience must be in fisheries biology, marine biology, environmental science, resource management or other related field plus 2 years in a supervisory or management level position in any occupational area.

License/Certification: Valid driver’s license and access to transportation.

Other Requirements: Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the agency.

Trainee Option: Candidates with an equivalent combination of 7.5+ years of relevant education and experience after completion of high school may be considered and hired in ‘trainee status’ for this position.

When applicable, the work of an employee in trainee status in this position shall be overseen by a fully qualified individual. An employee in trainee status shall meet the minimum qualifications within the period of time specified on the SJD, not to exceed one year of being hired into this position.

Responsibilities

Develops, implements, supervises and evaluates programs to monitor, manage and restore marine and anadromous finfish and invertebrates, as well as the fisheries for them, to attain long range goals of the Department. This includes developing budgets, scheduling of personnel and reporting results to the Division Chief and others within and outside the Department.

Supervises and evaluates performances of Fisheries Statistics, Invertebrate Fisheries, Recreational Fisheries and Anadromous-Marine Fisheries Units staff of the Marine Division.

Represents the State on committees charged with providing scientific information, expertise and management advise concerning the management of interjurisdictional marine species as well as development and review of fisheries management plans.

Communicates within the Department, with other State and federal agencies, as well as with the general public and the media regarding fisheries management and research matters.

Represents the State when called upon by serving on numerous marine interstate fisheries management boards and committees as established by Federal and State protocols charged with managing marine resources and fisheries along the Atlantic Coast.

Assists the Division Chief in the operation of the Department’s Region 3 Office or other support as needed.

Presents Department testimony before the legislature concerning legislation related to marine fisheries and marine resources.
