Description Of Work Salary Range: $35,984.00 – $62,971.00
This position is located at Alexander Correctional Institution in Taylorsville, NC (Alexander County). Work in this class involves first‑line supervision of Correctional Officer I’s in minimum‑custody facilities, increasing custody and security coverage. Positions assign lower‑level custody staff to a particular area or post, oversee officer activities and performance, and ensure that the custody, security, and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures, and enforce rules and regulations according to policy. Positions may sometimes be the highest‑ranking custody staff on the grounds or the Officer‑in‑Charge (OIC) and report to a Correctional Lieutenant I or a Correctional Assistant Superintendent.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Management Preferences
Thorough knowledge of the overall operation of correctional facilities.
Thorough knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, rules, and regulations associated with the control and management of inmates.
Applicants must pass a background check to be eligible for this job.
This is a full‑time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.
Note To Current State Employees The salary grade for this position is NC07. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Depending on those factors, a pay increase MAY result. The posting will close at 11:59 P.M. the night before the end date.
Minimum Education And Experience High School or GED diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary special qualifications must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
