About the Work Unit The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) serves and safeguards Colorado people and protects property, resources, and environment. DFPC’s vision is to be the nation’s premier state fire organization, with bold leadership and professionalism. The Division has four sections: Center of Excellence, Fire and Life Safety, Professional Qualifications and Training, and Wildland Fire Management. Wildland Fire Management supports local agencies with administrative, technical, preparedness, planning, response, and prescribed fire and fuels functions.

Work Environment This is a hybrid position. Work hours: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday‑Friday.

About the Position This position oversees the safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance of maintenance operations for the state‑owned aviation fleet, including rotor‑wing and fixed‑wing aircraft. The role ensures aircraft remain mission‑ready, meet regulatory standards, and operate safely.

Responsibilities

Fleet & Maintenance Oversight

Coordinate and oversee all planned and unplanned maintenance, repairs, inspections, and modifications for state‑owned aircraft.

Plan, monitor, and execute inspections, overhauls, repairs, and component replacements.

Support contracted and state employees; ensure activities are executed safely, compliant, efficient, and high quality.

Develop and enforce standard operating procedures, policies, and quality control practices.

Develop and manage training programs for internal and external personnel to ensure compliance.

Ensure inspection aids, special tools, and equipment are available, inspected, calibrated, and maintained.

Manage tool control and calibration program to maintain serviceable and calibrated condition.

Assist with complex and specialized maintenance requirements.

Manage aircraft records, FAA Airworthiness Directives (ADs), and Service Bulletins (SBs); maintain release procedures.

Ensure accuracy and timeliness of maintenance logs and records.

Respond to Aircraft on Ground (AOG) situations and lead return‑to‑service actions quickly and safely.

Foster a safety‑first, accountable, and collaborative culture within the maintenance division.

Regulatory Compliance

Ensure compliance with FAR/FAA Part 133/135 and Part 145 air carrier certificates, CDPS/DFPC policies, and federal regulations.

Serve as primary point of contact with FAA inspectors; coordinate audits, surveillance, and corrective actions.

Maintain full compliance with FAA regulations, company policies, and manufacturer requirements.

Maintain aircraft in accordance with approved maintenance programs; track time/life‑limited components.

Responsible for correcting safety or compliance issues.

Maintenance Planning & Operational Coordination

Collaborate closely with DFPC Aviation Branch Chief, Chief Pilot, and other personnel to align maintenance efforts with mission demands.

Manage AOG situations efficiently and promptly.

Work closely with flight operations, safety, and scheduling to align maintenance with mission demands.

Manage and train internal and external personnel assigned to maintain an aircraft in safety and risk management programs.

Plan and manage maintenance budgets, parts procurement, planned maintenance schedules, and parts inventory.

Evaluate vendors, contractors, and overhaul facilities for cost‑effective, safe, and high‑quality services.

Negotiate and execute applicable maintenance contracts and service agreements, including warranty programs.

Ensure workforce qualifications, certifications, and training currency; coordinate recurrent OEM and FAA training.

Plan long‑term maintenance strategies to minimize downtime and reduce costs.

Record Keeping, Training, and Other Duties as Assigned

Ensure aircraft records, maintenance data, and flight data are maintained in accordance with FAA regulations.

Oversee maintenance management personnel training requirements and provide input on training planning.

Conduct internal and external facility audits as necessary.

Perform advanced administrative duties, including data entry and computer usage.

Update and interface with a computerized maintenance tracking program.

Manage FAA regulatory documentation as necessary.

Personnel may be relieved of regular duties and assigned to wildfire incidents, following the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) guidelines.

Required Minimum Qualifications and Experiences

Current FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) certificate.

Current FAA Inspection Authorization (IA) or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.

9 years of documented experience in rotorcraft helicopter and fixed‑wing maintenance OR equivalent education and/or experience.

Required Competencies

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Computer proficiency with Microsoft 365, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and inventory control software.

Strong organizational skills; ability to multitask in a fast‑paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

10+ years documented experience in rotorcraft helicopter maintenance with supervisory responsibility and leadership skills.

Experience with Black Hawk UH‑60/S‑70, Bell 205, and/or Pilatus PC‑12 management.

Bachelor’s degree in Aviation Maintenance, Engineering, or related field.

Prior military helicopter maintenance experience, especially Army UH‑60.

Prior wildland firefighting and/or fire aviation experience.

Experience with state‑level interagency wildfire management programs.

Demonstrated commitment to public service and community involvement.

Willingness to travel to wildfire incidents and pre‑position assignments statewide and nationally.

Familiarity with flammable liquids and usage in fire suppression tasks.

Undergo fingerprinting, polygraph, drug screen, and medical physical exam.

Maintain NWCG required fitness levels throughout employment.
