Interim Controller (Temporary to Potential Permanent)
– Nonprofit organization in New York City
Base Pay $55–$70/hr
Location Midtown, Manhattan – three days per week onsite
Job Description We are seeking an experienced finance professional to serve as an Interim Controller for a growing non‑profit organization in New York City. This role combines hands‑on accounting with team management responsibilities, including oversight of accounts payable and payroll. The ideal candidate has experience managing audits successfully, is highly organized, and has worked with government‑funded programs, including DYCD contracts and state, city, and some federal grants. The position is well‑suited for someone who has been promoted from an individual contributor to leadership and can help drive process improvements, including supporting the early‑stage migration from Great Plains to Financial Edge Blackbaud. There is potential for this role to convert to a permanent position.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee day‑to‑day accounting operations, including general ledger, journal entries, reconciliations, and month‑end close
Manage payroll processing using ADP
Supervise a small team, including training and workflow management for accounts payable staff
Support the audit process, including preparation of schedules and coordination with external auditors
Assist with grant accounting and reporting for government‑funded programs, including DYCD contracts, state, city, and some federal funders
Facilitate migration from Great Plains (GP) to Financial Edge Blackbaud; prior GP experience preferred
Ensure compliance with internal controls and organizational policies
Prepare reports and financial statements for management and board review
Identify opportunities to streamline processes and improve operational efficiency
Qualifications
7+ years of accounting experience, including nonprofit experience preferred
Proven track record managing successful audits
Hands‑on experience with general ledger, reconciliations, payroll, and financial reporting
Experience with Great Plains (GP) and/or Blackbaud Financial Edge
Prior experience promoted from individual contributor to leadership preferred
Strong supervisory skills for small teams
Knowledge of grant accounting and compliance for government funders, including DYCD
Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills
