Accountant – Financial Services Specialist I
Location: Richmond, VA
Salary: $75,000 – $78,000 annually
Work Schedule: 40 hours Monday‑Friday
SENSITIVE POSITION
Position Summary Virginia’s community colleges have a 50‑year track record of educational excellence and innovation. This role performs system‑wide general accounting functions, including capital outlay general accounting and reporting, as well as plant fund general accounting and reporting. The accountant assists the Capital Outlay Accounting Manager and the Plant Funds Accounting Manager with daily and year‑end tasks, such as reviewing and analyzing maintenance reserve requests, preparing budget requests, recording fixed‑asset transactions, recording library books, and preparing accounting entries. The role works closely with the VCCS Facilities Management Department.
Key Responsibilities
Review and analyze maintenance reserve requests
Prepare budget requests
Record fixed‑asset transactions
Record library books and related entries
Prepare accounting entries for general accounting functions
Assist Capital Outlay Accounting Manager and Plant Funds Accounting Manager with daily and year‑end tasks
Work closely with the Facilities Management Department
Perform other duties as assigned, including emergency support
Additional Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned and to assist the agency or state government in case of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Qualifications Ability to:
Analyze data
Prepare accounting entries
Manage time and work on multiple assignments
Work independently with little supervision
Interpret administrative policies and procedures, exercise independent judgment, and make sound business decisions
Establish and maintain effective working relationships
Experience ministerie and Education:
Education and/or working experience in general accounting
Knowledge of GAAP
Experience with complex automated accounting systems such as Oracle, PeopleSoft, Cardinal, or other Oracle‑based systems
Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Excellent customer service experience
Additional Considerations
Experience with higher‑education, state or local government, general accounting
Experience with and working knowledge of PeopleSoft
Financial statement preparation experience, including footnotes
Fixed‑asset or capital outlay accounting experience
Travel & Vehicle Operation of a state vehicle: No
Required travel: None (travel as required for meetings and professional development)
