Duties / Responsibilities

Conduct complex criminal investigations targeting narcotics and drug‑related activities.

Prepare comprehensive and succinct criminal investigative reports and deliver briefings for senior personnel and other agencies.

Identify and apprehend drug traffickers and arrest individuals engaged in criminal drug activities.

Gather and analyze evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and a variety of other means.

Testify on behalf of the Federal government in court or before grand juries.

Basic Agent Training Applicants who have not completed previous federal law‑enforcement training must attend and complete a 16‑week residential training program. Current or former 1811 applicants who have successfully completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts must be attached).

Conditions of Employment

U.S. citizenship required.

Must obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance.

Must sign a mobility agreement for relocation to any DEA location.

Complete pre‑employment medical clearance, annual medical examination, and a full‑scope polygraph.

Selective Service registration or exemption required for eligible males.

Age 21‑36 at appointment (except for eligible veterans).

Pass E‑Verify employment verification check.

Serve a 1‑ or 2‑year trial period at the agency’s discretion.

Maintain a valid state driver’s license and comply with random drug testing.

Complete a 16‑week Basic Agent Training (BAT) course at the DEA Training Academy.

Qualifications Applicants must meet one of the following:

GL‑07 Level : One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GL/GS‑05, including duties such as assisting in investigations, writing reports, and researching data; or one full year of graduate‑level education demonstrating required knowledge and skills.

GL‑09 Level : One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GL/GS‑07, including duties such as assisting in investigations, collecting data, writing reports, and testifying; or appropriate graduate‑degree qualifications.

GS‑11 Level : One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GL/GS‑09, including duties such as conducting investigations, developing operational plans, and testifying; or appropriate doctoral-level education.

All educational qualifications must be accredited by a U.S. Department of Education‑recognized accrediting institution. Foreign credentials may be used if comparable.

Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) and combination of education and experience may also satisfy requirements per OPM guidelines.

Education Education must be accredited by a recognized institution. One year of graduate education is considered 18 semester hours. Students anticipated to graduate within nine months may be considered for a GL‑7 appointment based on SAA.

Additional Information Appointments will be made under Schedule B, Excepted Service. A 1‑ to 2‑year probationary/trial period may be required. Law enforcement availability (LEAP) compensation and other benefits reflect the nature of the position.
