Job SummaryProvides and preserves a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public while demonstrating courtesy, consideration, and prompt service. Positions are assigned based on experience and qualifications listed below. Job Duties

Highway Operations Worker (Grade 14)

– Entry‑level role. Handles motorized vehicles and equipment operations, pavement care and preservation, landscape care, roadside shoulder restoration, signing and striping, equipment delivery, environmental compliance, and vehicle/equipment maintenance.

Highway Operations Tech 1 (Grade 17)

– Apprentice level. Performs advanced duties similar to the Worker role and receives training for more complex tasks.

Highway Operations Tech 2 (Grade 18)

– Intermediate level. Leads projects, schedules and assigns work, inspects outputs, trains staff, and performs all duties of the lower levels.

Highway Operations Tech 3 (Grade 19)

– Full‑journey supervisor. Executes high‑level tasks with supervisory responsibilities, including oversight of subordinates and project management.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

Highway Operations Worker

– Minimum 6 months roadway or highway experience (motorized vehicle operation, heavy‑equipment maintenance, signing/striping, pavement care, tunnel or landscape maintenance).

Highway Operations Tech 1

– Minimum 1 year roadway or highway experience with similar duties.

Highway Operations Tech 2

– Minimum 2 years roadway or highway experience with comparable responsibilities.

Highway Operations Tech 3

– Minimum 3 years roadway or highway experience, including supervisory experience.

Selective Preferences & Requirements

All candidates must obtain an Arizona Class “A” CDL permit within 90 days of hire; a Class “A” commercial driver’s license within 6 months.Tech 1–3 candidates must possess a manual or automatic Class “A” CDL with a (N) tanker endorsement before start date; additional endorsements may be required.

Registered with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse; allowed ADOT to conduct limited CDL queries throughout employment.

Responds to emergency call‑outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, reaching the maintenance yard within 30 minutes.

Able to lift, carry, push or pull up to 50 lbs.

Valid driver’s license, completed training, and acceptable driving record; maintains state‑required vehicle insurance.

Pre‑Employment Requirements

Completion of the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E‑Verify).

Ability to work under extreme temperatures, rugged terrain, and high‑speed traffic conditions.
