Job Summary
The Scientist I position is a full‑time appointment in the laboratory of Dr. Alexey Glukhov within the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Medicine, at the University of Wisconsin‑Madison. Dr. Glukhov’s laboratory focuses on understanding mechanisms of heart rhythm disorders and regulation of cardiac function.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct electrophysiological studies and pharmacological testing on isolated, Langendorff‑perfused mouse and rat hearts and on isolated mouse and rat atrial preparations under a variety of physiological conditions (neurohormonal, mechanical, drug‑based stimulation). These experiments evaluate heart electrical activity, calcium signaling, and mechanical function.
Collect, organize, analyze, and document research data in accordance with institutional policies. Prepare research summaries, reports, and manuscripts for submission to peer‑reviewed journals, present findings at local and national scientific meetings, and review relevant scientific literature.
Assist in the preparation of research grant applications, support collaborative research projects within and outside UW‑Madison, and provide day‑to‑day supervision and guidance to undergraduate and graduate students.
Participate in seminars, meetings, and scholarly events organized by the Cardiovascular Research Center, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, and Department of Medicine.
Work onsite at a designated campus location.
Hold a 24‑month terminal appointment, with the possibility of extension or conversion to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding.
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated expertise in cardiac electrophysiology, cardiac mechanics, and cell biophysics.
Experience conducting research involving animal models.
Experience working with isolated cardiac preparations, including Langendorff‑perfused hearts and isolated atrial and sinoatrial node preparations from mouse and rat models.
Experience with electrophysiological measurement techniques such as ECG, optical mapping, and related electrical recording methods.
Knowledge of cardiac pharmacology and neurohormonal regulation of heart function.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in mechanobiology and mechanical regulation of cardiac function.
Experience with basic molecular biology techniques.
Experience working with isolated single cardiac muscle cells.
Experience using fluorescent microscopy and related imaging techniques.
Education Ph.D. in Biophysics or a closely related discipline is required by the start date of the position.
Compensation and Benefits The starting salary for the position is $65,000 annually; it is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
