This is an opportunity to lead a field engineering team, helping customers understand and implement Canonical's open source solutions in public clouds and data centers. The scope includes cloud offerings from Ubuntu, virtualization, Kubernetes, to open source solutions like MLops platforms and data platforms. As Canonical expands into new industries such as telecom, finance, healthcare, and media, we develop new open source solutions to meet their needs.
We believe Engineering Managers should be outstanding engineers, capable of troubleshooting technical issues and engaging in technical presales. They should contribute technically but focus more on guiding the team's direction, focus, and delivery. We also focus on growing management skills and soft skills training for engineers interested in management roles.
Our goal is to make open source easier, reliable, and secure, aiming to provide 'most software to most companies'. We select engineers globally for brilliance and motivation to advance open source. Our managers help teams achieve their potential and take pride in their results.
The role of a Cloud Field Engineering Manager at Canonical The team of cloud solutions architects works directly with customers to design private and public cloud solutions tailored to their workloads. Technologies include on-premise solutions like OpenStack, MicroCloud, Ceph, and deployable solutions like Kubernetes, Kubeflow, Spark, PostgreSQL. Managers and team members deploy, test, and hand over solutions, and participate in presales for technical advice.
The manager handles line management, career guidance, talent development, technical representation, collaboration, and active participation in presales to meet quarterly goals.
Location: This role is home-based, managing a team in your time zone.
What your day will look like
Lead and develop a team of Field engineers in Presales and Professional Services
Solve customer problems by promoting technologies and acting as a trusted advisor
Work remotely within a single major time zone
Coach, mentor, and provide career development feedback
Identify and measure team health indicators
Implement disciplined engineering processes
Represent your team and products to stakeholders, partners, and customers
Develop and promote engineering and organizational practices
Plan and manage progress on goals and projects
Participate in leadership team collaborations
What we are looking for in you
Knowledge of cloud computing concepts & technologies (Kubernetes, OpenStack, AWS, GCP, Azure, Ceph)
Practical Linux and networking knowledge
Experience in technical presales
Dynamic, proactive, and people-oriented personality
Excellent communication skills in English
Passion for developing and growing people
Experience leading, coaching, mentoring engineers
Organized with a focus on timely, high-quality results
Strong academic background
Willingness to travel up to 40%
Additional skills that you might also bring
Second language (Spanish or French preferred)
Python knowledge
Experience collaborating with external partners
Stakeholder feedback for engineering roadmaps
