This is an opportunity to lead a field engineering team, helping customers understand and implement Canonical's open source solutions in public clouds and data centers. The role involves working across cloud offerings, from Ubuntu to virtualization, private cloud, Kubernetes, and open source solutions like MLops platforms and data platforms. As Canonical expands into industries like telco, finance, healthcare, and media, we develop new open source solutions to meet their needs.
We believe Engineering Managers should be outstanding engineers, capable of troubleshooting technical issues, engaging in presales conversations, and contributing to project delivery. They should also focus on shaping team direction, focus, and growth. We develop management skills and train engineers interested in soft skills to become managers.
Our goal is to make open source easier, reliable, and secure, aiming to provide 'most software to most companies.' We select engineers globally for brilliance and motivation. Our managers help teams achieve more and feel proud of their results.
The role of a Cloud Field Engineering Manager at Canonical The team of cloud solutions architects works directly with customers to design private and public cloud solutions, including products like Openstack, MicroCloud, Ceph, Kubernetes, Kubeflow, Spark, PostgreSQL, etc. Managers and team members deploy, test, and hand over solutions, and participate in presales to advise during sales processes.
The manager is responsible for line management, career guidance, technical representation, collaboration, and active participation in presales to meet quarterly goals.
Location This role is home-based, managing a team in your time zone.
What your day will look like
Lead and develop a team of Field engineers in Presales and Professional Services
Solve customer problems and be a trusted advisor
Work remotely in a single major time zone
Coach, mentor, and provide career development feedback
Identify and measure team health indicators
Implement disciplined engineering processes
Represent your team and product to stakeholders, partners, and customers
Develop and promote engineering and organizational practices
Plan and manage progress on goals and projects
Participate in leadership collaboration
What we are looking for in you
Knowledge of cloud computing concepts & technologies (Kubernetes, Openstack, AWS, GCP, Azure, Ceph)
Practical Linux and networking knowledge
Experience in technical presales
Dynamic, project-loving personality with strong communication skills in English
Passion and experience in developing and growing people
Leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills
Organizational ability to ensure timely, high-quality results
Strong academic background
Willingness to travel up to 40%
Additional skills that you might also bring
Second language (Spanish or French)
Python knowledge
Experience with external partners
Experience with internal teams and stakeholder feedback
