Director, Data Center Operations
Reporting to: SVP, Operations
Full-Time Exempt
The Director of Data Center Operations provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and business expertise to support the comprehensive facilities needs of Hivelocity. This role is responsible for integrating financial planning, master site development, and project execution with day-to-day facilities operations. This includes managing infrastructure maintenance, data center performance, and business continuity/disaster recovery protocols across all owned and leased properties.
In addition to overseeing daily operational activities, issue resolution, RFOs/RCAs, and compliance with company policies and procedures, this individual will serve as the technical escalation point for infrastructure-related concerns.
This role manages multi-million-dollar annual capital and operational budgets and requires strong judgment, strategic thinking, and effective decision-making capabilities. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional leadership and team-building skills, excel in collaborative environments, and demonstrate strong interpersonal, negotiation, analytical, and communication abilities. Success in this position requires a customer-focused approach, high integrity, and the ability to lead through influence.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement facilities policies, procedures, and organizational structures aligned with senior leadership direction and in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Lead the development and execution of both short- and long-term operational strategies aligned with company growth and profitability goals, with a focus on cost control, quality, safety, and sustainability.
Oversee the creation and management of operating budgets for each data center within the assigned region.
Ensure expenditures are aligned with budgetary goals and corporate financial requirements.
Provide leadership through Data Center Managers and other key personnel to ensure proactive delivery of services including space planning, power/cooling management, capital project execution, maintenance, and disaster recovery.
Collaborate cross-functionally with regional leaders and business unit heads to maintain and elevate operational standards.
Participate in contract negotiations for improvements and upgrades on owned and leased properties.
Serve as a key decision-maker for major operational procedures, problem resolution, and cost approvals.
Foster positive communication and relationships across all levels of staff and executive leadership.
Use benchmarking and industry KPIs (e.g., ITIL, IFMA standards) to assess and enhance operational efficiency across all facilities.
Ensure ongoing compliance with government regulations and obtain necessary certifications and permits.
Represent the company in community and industry organizations through active participation and networking.
Contribute to M&A due diligence efforts by evaluating potential facility operations.
Travel to facilities as required—approximately 20% travel, with a minimum of quarterly site visits.
Basic Qualifications
Minimum 10 years of experience in facilities or data center management, engineering, or related field.
At least 5 years of experience leading teams, including virtual management across distributed locations.
Strong understanding of applicable regulations and working knowledge of electrical/mechanical systems, maintenance standards, and safety/environmental codes (OSHA, EPA, DOT, ADA, NFPA).
Proficient in building codes, construction/development practices, and project management.
Technical familiarity with systems such as UPS, HVAC, generators, switchgear, and structured cabling.
Experience managing P&L responsibilities and developing financial models and budgets.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in business, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field—or equivalent experience.
