A leading specialty contractor with over a century of success and recent double-digit growth is hiring an Assistant Controller or Accounting Manager to join its accounting leadership team. This is a newly created role designed to support continued expansion and strengthen financial operations.
The Opportunity:
This is a hands-on position with leadership responsibility across accounting operations, process improvement, and special projects. Youll work directly with the Controller and cross-functional leaders to drive operational excellence and prepare for future growth. The role is ideal for someone who enjoys variety, embraces continuous improvement, and likes to take the lead on varying projects. This is a growth-focused role with a clear path to Controller.
What Youll Do:
- Lead and execute special projects such as documenting standard operating procedures, evaluating new accounting tools, and supporting software implementations
- Prepare, post, and review journal entries while ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the general ledger
- Manage monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities, including general ledger reviews and reconciliations
- Assist with corporate budgeting across multiple departments and cost centers; calculate annual labor burden rates
- Support project accounting functions by contributing to cost review processes and forecasting for active contracts
- Own compliance-related responsibilities, including preparation of government filings, support for pre-qualification documents, and ESOP reporting
- Review and approve vendor payments, including A/P invoices, ACHs, wires, and manual disbursements
- Advise on and research tax-related matters, such as income, payroll, sales & use, and property taxes
- Develop and refine departmental policies in collaboration with the Controller
- Record and track fixed asset acquisitions and dispositions
- Serve as a liaison to other departments, triaging accounting-related inquiries and ensuring follow-through by the right team member
Ideal Background:
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Bachelors in Accounting (CPA or CPA candidate strongly preferred)
- Strong technical accounting knowledge
- Advanced Excel skills (Power Queries, PivotTables, VLOOKUP, etc.)
- Comfortable working independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
- Highly adaptable and solutions-oriented with strong communication skills
