Coordinator of Special Education
(COSE) who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders. This is an exciting opportunity for teachers who desire to serve where their efforts matter. In BPS, the teachers and leaders are committed to high expectations for achievement, equal access to instruction, academic proficiency for all students, and closing achievement gaps among subgroups. Reports to: Principal/Head of School and Office of Special Education (OSE) Assistant Directors Responsibilities Support student outcomes improvement and strengthen family engagement Collaborate with the Principal/Head of School to: Create a respectful, engaging environment for all students Ensure students with disabilities participate in general education per IEP Provide or coordinate professional development for special education staff Coordinate services for students with disabilities and at-risk students Serve as liaison and coordinate outside agency services Engage families as partners in planning and problem-solving Support culturally competent practices Assist in providing FAPE, LRE, and specialized instruction for students with disabilities Support special education teachers with research-based practices Assist with implementing a Code of Conduct for students with disabilities Maintain regulatory compliance Manage referrals, chair team meetings, develop IEPs, and secure parent signatures Support and consult with special education staff on IEP and team responsibilities Chair team meetings for students in private placements returning to BPS Chair Section 504 eligibility and develop accommodation plans Align student schedules with IEPs and 504 plans Manage compliance activities including assessments, notices, documentation, and reporting Participate in dispute resolution, hearings, and mediations Handle Medicaid reimbursement activities Perform other duties as assigned Participate in organizational meetings and professional development Core Competencies:
Using the SISP rubric, BPS identifies key skills for all SISP staff: Accountability for student achievement: Set high goals, assess progress, analyze data Communicating professional knowledge: Exhibit strong understanding of child development and support plans Effective instruction: Build engaging, accessible learning environments and adapt instruction Cultural proficiency: Respect diverse backgrounds and create inclusive environments Parent/family engagement: Build respectful partnerships and share strategies Professional reflection & collaboration: Reflect, seek feedback, collaborate, and support colleagues Qualifications - Required Valid MA DESE License in Special Education, School Social Work, School Psychology, or Speech-Language Pathology Knowledge of DESE Regulations, IDEA, and Section 504 Experience with IEP process, special education programs, collaboration, and parent relationships Ability to meet BPS Standards of Effective Practice Collaborative skills with administrators, providers, families, students, and partners Three years of successful urban school or human services experience Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills Qualifications - Preferred Master’s Degree in Special Education or related field Administrative/supervisory certification and experience Urban special education teaching or related service experience Experience with SEIMS Fluency in one of BPS's official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Haitian Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Somali Terms:
