THIS IS A LONG-TERM SUB POSITION that is expected to start on the first day of school and end on 04/01/2026. Please note that all substitute teachers are hired as per diem subs, even when placed in long-term assignments. All substitutes begin at the per diem rate of pay. Position: Coordinator of Special Education (COSE) - School Based Boston Public Schools seeks an exceptional

Coordinator of Special Education

(COSE) who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders. This is an exciting opportunity for teachers who desire to serve where their efforts matter. In BPS, the teachers and leaders are committed to high expectations for achievement, equal access to instruction, and closing the achievement gap among subgroups.

Reports to: Principal/Head of School and Office of Special Education (OSE) Assistant Directors

Responsibilities:

Support the improvement of student outcomes and strengthen family engagement.

Collaborate with the Principal/Head of School to:

Create a respectful and engaging school environment for all students.

Ensure students with disabilities participate in the general education environment per IEP.

Provide or coordinate professional development for special education staff.

Coordinate services for students with disabilities and at-risk students.

Serve as liaison to outside agencies providing services to students.

Engage families in planning and problem-solving, and assist with school assignments.

Support culturally competent practices at all levels.

Collaborate on providing FAPE, LRE, and specialized instruction for students with disabilities.

Support special education teachers with research-based instructional and social-emotional practices.

Assist with the implementation of the Code of Conduct for students with disabilities.

Maintain regulatory compliance.

Process referrals and chair team meetings for placements and IEP development, including transition planning at age 14.

Support the development of IEPs and 504 plans, and collaborate on student schedules.

Manage activities related to compliance with state and federal regulations, including assessments and meetings scheduling, parent notices, and documentation.

Participate in dispute resolution, hearings, and mediation as needed.

Handle Medicaid reimbursement activities.

Perform additional duties as assigned by the principal or supervisor.

Participate in organizational meetings and professional development.

Qualifications - Required:

Valid MA DESE License in Special Education, School Social Work, School Psychologist, or Speech-Language Pathology.

Knowledge of DESE Regulations, IDEA, and Section 504.

Experience with IEP process, special education programs, and family collaboration.

Ability to meet BPS Standards of Effective Practice.

Collaborative skills with administrators, providers, families, and students.

Three years of successful urban school or urban human service experience.

Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.

Qualifications - Preferred:

Master’s Degree in Special Education or related field.

Administrative or supervisory certification and experience.

Urban special education teaching or related service experience.

Experience with SEIMS.

Fluency in BPS official languages: Spanish, Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, or Somali.
