Accounting Manager/Controller

Overview

Our client, a mission-driven nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., is seeking a skilled and strategic Accounting Manager or Controller to lead its financial operations. This role is ideal for a finance professional with nonprofit experience who is passionate about supporting impactful work through sound financial stewardship.

Responsibilities

• Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and grant reporting.
• Lead month-end and year-end close processes and prepare financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
• Manage budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning.
• Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and donor reporting requirements.
• Coordinate annual audits and liaise with external auditors.
• Implement and maintain internal controls and financial policies.
• Supervise accounting staff and support their professional development.
• Utilize ERP systems to streamline financial operations and reporting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred).
• Minimum of 5–8 years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
• Strong proficiency in ERP systems and Excel.
• Deep understanding of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting.
• Excellent leadership, analytical, and communication skills.
• Competitive salary range: $115,000 – $145,000
