Definition This is a flexibly staffed position in the City's Development Services Department, Planning and Development Division. The individual in this position will provide professional and technical planning services related to land use development.
Reporting relationship: Senior Planner
Planner I: This class is the entry-level position within professional planning. The position involves professional-level duties and judgement. The Planner I performs less complex to moderately difficult project management work.
Planner II: This class requires professional planning work of moderate difficulty. It is characterized by increasingly specialized knowledge of the planning field and a more elevated level of required duties and responsibilities. Individuals in this class may work independently on assignments but generally are not responsible for team leadership. Examples of Work
Depending upon assignment, duties performed by the Planner I may include, but are not limited to the following: Analyze and review development projects for conformance with adopted City plans, applicable codes and ordinances and other regulations, and prepare recommendations. Conduct onsite inspections and investigations of proposed development projects or community areas. Facilitate pre-development meetings for development applications. Provide information to the public on City requirements related to City planning, policies, and procedures. Prepare and present data in the form of written, graphic, or oral reports on planning matters. Assist in the coordination of departmental activities with other departments and with outside agencies. Other related duties as assigned. Subject to 24 hour recall. Depending upon assignment, duties performed by the Planner II may include, but are not limited to the following:
All duties of the Planner I. Analyze data and make recommendations on complex planning matters, development regulations, policies and procedures. Coordinate variance processes for the Boards of Adjustment. Represent the City in meetings with other departments, organizations and professional groups on planning matters. Facilitate discussions to aid in building consensus, and resolve conflicts on projects and policy matters. Other duties as assigned. Subject to 24 hour recall. Education, Experience, or Certification
Planner I:
Bachelor's degree in planning or a closely related field from an accredited college or university and one (1) year of relevant professional experience required.

A Master's degree in Urban Planning or closely related field may substitute for the required experience.
Planner II: Bachelor's degree in planning or a closely related field from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of professional planning experience performing duties comparable to those of a Planner I.
-OR-
One year of experience performing duties comparable to those of a Planner I in the City of Missouri City AND a Master's degree in Urban Planning or a closely related field. Supplemental Information
