Radio Communications Manager
Manages and maintains the P25 800 MHz Trunked Radio System, provides the City of Laredo departments with technical support, and promotes the interoperability use of the system with State and local law enforcement agencies. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Creates and modifies programming radio's templates (code-plugs); programs new radios and reprograms existing radios. Manages the South Texas Regional P25 VHF Trunked Radio System. Maintains, repairs, and replaces radio system's infrastructure. Prepares RFP and RFQ responses for new two way radio infrastructure equipment. Establishes and maintains the City radio equipment inventory and radio equipment repair database. Assesses current and future capital equipment needs for the City's radio system; works with vendors to determine equipment costs. Assists in support and maintenance of the City's network Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use. Performs related work as required. Work Environment/Conditions and Physical Demands Physical Effort Requirements Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional outside work. Exerting up to 35 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects. Work Environment Locations Seldom confined space Sometimes construction site, warehouse environment Frequently outdoor environment, vehicles Often office or similar indoor environment Exposures Never individuals with known violent backgrounds, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances Seldom individuals who are hostile or irate, communicable diseases, fumes or airborne particles, loud noises Sometimes extreme cold, extreme heat, moving mechanical parts Travel Never international travel Seldom national travel Sometimes regional travel Frequently local travel Minimum Qualifications Required Education and Experience Associates degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science or related field At least five (5) years of experience in Motorola p25 trunked radio systems and Motorola two-way radio programming Valid Licenses and Certifications Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment. As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment. Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment. Effective January 7, 2008, all persons in safety-sensitive functions/positions, as per City of Laredo Drug and Alcohol Policy definition, shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
