Performs a variety of routine and complex technical and administrative work in plans review and analysis to determine compliance with all applicable codes as well as accepted standards relating to building codes. Collaborates with Historic Department as needed & exercises considerable initiative and independent judgment under the general direction of the Building Official & Historic Director. Work emphasizes a wide range of customer service functions and frequent interaction with the public. Job Duties and Responsibilities: Interprets and enforces the Florida Building Code, to include the historic provisions. Reviews plans and applications for permits to ensure compliance with codes, laws and ordinances. Advises applicants of required changes. Gives final approval on applicable plans. May occasionally perform historic inspections. Answers questions and provides project representatives with explanations of deficiencies and lack of compliance; provides guidance to rectify deficiencies. Processes all permit related documents/forms/information and ensures proper routing. Provides technical assistance and information on historic preservation to property owners. Responds to customers' inquiries received through email, telephone, mail, or in person regarding the permitting process. Assists customers and exercises independent judgment to resolve issues. Assists the Building Official or Deputy Building Official and Historic Director as needed. Performs other related tasks as required. Qualifications: Bachelors degree in Historic Preservation, Architecture, Architectural History or related field. A minimum of two years of related experience, preferably in a local or state preservation agency. Experience in construction / construction management is preferred. Valid Florida Driver's License. Benefits: 16 days including 3 floating days for holidays. 96 hours annually for sick leave. 80 hours in the first year of employment, increasing up to 188 hours after 25 years for annual leave. 5 or 10 work days for bereavement leave. Mandatory employee contribution of 10% of salary to pension with a vesting period of 10 years. Optional 401(a) contribution by City of 7% of employee base annual salary with a vesting period of 5 years.
