Department of Surgery

Your Role on the Team

The position of Physician Assistant in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care of surgical patients, primarily located at a new hospital in Irvine, California.

The surgical patients will include general surgery and specialty surgical services at all levels of care, including the intensive care unit. Inpatient surgical services include colorectal surgery, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology, vascular.

Duties include consults and inpatient care and management, evaluating care, ordering diagnostics and creating a treatment plan. The physician assistant will participate in inpatient sign out/hand-off at the beginning and end of shift, round and communicate with the surgery teams/residents/attending physicians, and be responsible for surgical consultations on potential surgical patients. The physician assistant will be involved in resuscitations of surgical patients from the ED and ICU, coordinate procedures (including scheduling operations and other procedures), admit and discharge patients (including admission H&P, orders, discharge summary, instructions, and medications) when appropriate. The physician assistant will triage phone calls from patients and nurses, review critical labs, follow up of results with patients and medical staff, obtain comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and daily physical examinations/assessments, and explore patient health needs in a trauma-informed manner. The physician assistant will identify, treat, and manage hospitalized patients and should demonstrate advanced medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication, timely and compliant documentation, and responsibility for professional development and competency validation. The PA will participate in comprehensive inpatient care and provide multidisciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians. In addition, the PA will assist in the operating room, working closely with surgeons and other healthcare professionals to provide optimal patient care throughout surgical procedures. This position is represented by the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) union.

What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Practice agreements completed and on file in Department.
  • Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
  • HIPPA and other training completion as required by Medical Center Annual TB screening and any applicable test to meet JCAHO requirements
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information.
  • Must possess the skill, knowledge, and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the organization.

  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
  • Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes.
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
  • Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
  • Must be a current, active, and unrestricted licensed Physician Assistant in the State of California.
  • Active Board Certification from NCCPA (National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants)
  • Active National Provider Identifier (NPI) number
  • The PA must have a current DEA number from the US Drug Enforcement Administration
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification.
  • Within six months of hire, ATLS certification.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of Windows and MS Office software applications (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese
  • Familiarity with UC policies and procedures.
