The Department of Surgery is seeking a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented individual for the position of Nurse Practitioner I. The role will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care of surgical patients, primarily located at a new hospital in Irvine, California.
The surgical patients will include general surgery and specialty surgical services, on all levels of care, including the intensive care unit. Inpatient surgical services include colorectal surgery, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology, vascular.
Duties will include consults and inpatient care and management. Responsibilities include evaluating care, ordering diagnostics, and creating a treatment plan. The nurse practitioner will participate with inpatient sign out/hand-off at beginning and end of shift, round and communicate with the surgery teams/residents/attending physicians, and be responsible for surgical consultations on potential surgical patients.
The nurse practitioner will be involved in resuscitations of surgical patients from the ED and ICU. Responsibilities include coordination of procedures, admit and discharge patients, and triage phone calls from patients and nurses. The nurse practitioner will also be responsible for reviewing critical labs, follow-up of results with patients and medical staff, obtaining comprehensive medical histories, performing initial and daily physical examinations/assessments, and exploring patient's health needs in a trauma-informed manner.

This position may perform functions as appropriate to their scope of practice, including the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and surgical procedures per their approved standardized procedure.

Required:
- Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
- Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
- Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
- Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes.
- Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
- Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
- Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
- Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information.
- Successful completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program.
- Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.
- Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license.
- Current, active, unrestricted Furnishing license and DEA registration.
- Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
- NP National Board Certification (Beginning February 2018): Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG.
- Current BLS and ACLS certification.
- Within six months of hire, ATLS certification.
Preferred:
- Knowledge of Windows and MS Office software applications (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, Power point and Outlook).
- Familiarity with UC policies and procedures.
- Less than 1 year Experience in Trauma/Critical Care nursing.
