Your Role on the Team

The position of Nurse Practitioner I in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care of surgical patients, primarily located at a new hospital in Irvine, California. The surgical patients will include general surgery and specialty surgical services, on all levels of care, including the intensive care unit. Inpatient surgical services include colorectal surgery, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology, vascular.

Duties include consults and inpatient care and management, evaluating care, ordering diagnostics, and creating a treatment plan. The NP will participate in inpatient sign out/hand-off at the beginning and end of shift, round with the surgery teams/residents/attending physicians, and coordinate surgical consultations. The NP will be involved in resuscitations of surgical patients from the ED and ICU. Responsibilities include coordinating procedures (including scheduling operations and other procedures), admitting and discharging patients (including admission H&P, orders, discharge summary, instructions, and medications) when appropriate. The NP will triage phone calls, review critical labs, follow up on results with patients and medical staff, obtain comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and daily physical examinations, and explore patient health needs in a trauma-informed manner. The NP should demonstrate advanced medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and be responsible for professional development and competency validation. The NP will provide multi-disciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians in inpatient settings. NP with RNFA credentials may assist in the operating room in collaboration with surgeons. This position is represented by the California Nurses Association (CNA) union.

This position may perform functions as appropriate to their scope of practice, including management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and surgical procedures per approved standardized procedures. Familiarity with statestatute for licenses is necessary. Privileges are unique to each person and may not include all privileges. The NP may provide patient care across age groups based on education and licensing. The NP is accountable to and evaluated by the supervising/collaborating physician or designee and the Administrative Manager.

Required:

  • Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility when interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
  • Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes. Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
  • Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
  • Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to PHI or other sensitive information.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted Furnishing license and DEA registration.
  • Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • NP National Board Certification (Beginning February 2018): AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification.
  • Within six months of hire, ATLS certification.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of Windows and MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Familiarity with UC policies and procedures.
  • Less than 1 year of Experience in Trauma/Critical Care nursing.
