Role and Responsibilities
- The Nurse Practitioner I in the Department of Surgery will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care of surgical patients, primarily located at a new hospital in Irvine, California, including general surgery and specialty surgical services, on all levels of care, including the intensive care unit.
- Inpatient surgical services include colorectal surgery, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology, vascular.
- Duties include consults and inpatient care and management: evaluating care, ordering diagnostics, and creating a treatment plan.
- participate with inpatient sign out/hand-off at beginning and end of shift; round and communicate with the surgery teams/residents/attending physicians.
- Responsible for surgical consultations on potential surgical patients and involvement in resuscitations of surgical patients from the ED and ICU.
- Coordinate procedures (including scheduling operations) and manage follow-up, admit and discharge patients (including admission H&P, orders, discharge summary, instructions, and medications) when appropriate.
- Triage phone calls from patients and nurses; review critical labs; follow-up of results with patients and medical staff; obtain comprehensive medical histories; perform initial and daily physical examinations/assessments; explore patient health needs in a trauma-informed manner.
- Identify, treat, and manage hospitalized patients; demonstrate advanced medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication, timely and compliant documentation, and ongoing professional development and competency validation.
- Provide multi-disciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians; participate in comprehensive care of patients in inpatient settings.
- Nurse Practitioners with RNFA credentials may assist in the operating room, collaborating with surgeons and the surgical team to ensure high-quality patient care throughout surgical procedures.
- This position is represented by the California Nurses Association (CNA) union. The NP scope of practice includes management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and procedures per approved standardized procedure; privileges are unique to each person and credentialing/privileges must be completed prior to the first working day.
- The NP is accountable to supervising/collaborating physicians or administrative leadership within the health system.
What It Takes to be Successful
- Required: Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
- Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
- Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job. Clear communication of medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes.
- Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload; maintain privacy, confidentiality, and security policies for PHI or other sensitive information.
- Successful completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program; current, active, unrestricted California RN license; current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license; current, active, unrestricted furnishing license and DEA registration; Active National Provider Identifier (NPI); NP National Board Certification (Beginning February 2018): Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG; Current BLS and ACLS certification; Within six months of hire, ATLS certification.
- Preferred: Knowledge of Windows and MS Office; familiarity with UC policies and procedures; experience in Trauma/Critical Care nursing (<1 year).
- Other: The NP must be credentialed to practice and privileged through Medical Staff; credentialing and privileges must be completed prior to the first working day.
