This position may be filled remotely, or in any of our locations. The primary role of the Director of Business Development is to drive the revenue growth of the firm, enhance brand awareness through key initiatives, and manage the Business Development and Proposals Teams throughout the US. This leadership position is responsible for driving strategy across the firm\'s industry and practice groups. The role requires a creative and motivating approach to developing business development and proposal teams and implementing firm-wide strategies. Key collaboration is expected with stakeholders across the firm, including the Chief Business Development Officer, Senior Director of Marketing & Communications, and partner leadership to create and implement short- and long-term strategies to strengthen brand awareness, client relationships, and revenue. Essential functions include the following responsibilities.
Responsibilities
Lead the development, execution and review of strategies and related initiatives for the relevant practices and lawyers. Lead and drive revenue generation initiatives including client targeting, market research, responses to RFPs, and client relationship reviews. Collaborate with communications, brand, and recognition teams to develop strategic visibility initiatives and build brand awareness. Provide direction, infrastructure, KPIs and metrics for key client initiatives and guide team efforts. Build, manage and lead a highly effective team of marketing and business development professionals located across the U.S. Develop interpersonal relationships with firm-wide industry leaders, practice group leaders, managing directors, and broader department members. Coordinate with cross-functional teams to elevate matter collection and streamline knowledge management for client-facing materials. Drive cross-functional projects to increase efficiency, collaboration, and visibility for the department and the firm. Work with the Business Development Team to implement key initiatives and pursue cross-selling opportunities. Assist in developing strategies to expand existing client relationships and generate new business. Promote consistency in messaging and best practices through ongoing staff development and training. Share best practices across industry and practice groups and within the department to maximize productivity. Coach and develop team members, identify developmental needs, and mentor or train as needed. Guide, direct and motivate the team with performance standards and monitoring. Identify and develop best practices and set long-range objectives with actionable strategies.
Qualifications
4-year degree with major coursework in marketing, communications or related field required; Master’s degree preferred; industry certifications preferred. 15 years of progressive expertise in marketing and business development; substantial multi-office leadership experience, preferably in a professional services firm. Strong business development abilities including prioritization, planning, organization, delegation, negotiation, budgeting, and ROI analysis. Ability to motivate attorneys to engage in business development and develop implementation plans. Experience delivering high levels of client service to individuals at all organizational levels. Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to produce compelling proposals, collateral, research reports and client-facing materials. Forward-thinking with the ability to deliver solutions to complex challenges; high maturity and confidence to interact with sophisticated clients. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and business development technologies; strong relationship-building skills. Ability to manage a large, geographically dispersed team; collaborative and facilitative leadership style. Ability to work independently and with teams; strong change-management capabilities. Understanding of current legal market trends, news, and innovations.
