The primary role of the Director of Business Development is to drive revenue growth, enhance brand awareness through key initiatives, and manage the Business Development and Proposals Teams across the U.S. The position requires leading strategy across the firm’s industry and practice groups, and providing creative, motivating leadership for the development of business development and proposal efforts. The Director will collaborate with the Chief Business Development Officer, Senior Director of Marketing & Communications, and partner leadership to implement short- and long-term strategies to strengthen brand awareness, improve client relationships, and generate new revenue. Responsibilities
Lead development, execution and review of strategies and related initiatives for relevant practices and lawyers. Drive revenue generation initiatives including client targeting, market research, responses to RFPs, and client relationship reviews. Partner with communications, brand, and awards/recognition teams to develop and execute visibility initiatives and build brand awareness. Provide direction, infrastructure, KPIs and metrics for key client initiatives and lead a geographically dispersed team of marketing and business development professionals. Establish and maintain relationships with firm-wide industry leaders, practice group leaders, managing directors and the broader department. Collaborate across teams to elevate matter collection and streamline knowledge management for client-facing materials. Work with department leadership to drive cross-functional projects and increase efficiency, collaboration, and visibility. Drive implementation of key initiatives and identify cross-selling opportunities with the Business Development Team. Develop and implement strategies to expand existing client relationships and generate new business. Create consistent messaging and best practices through staff development and training; share best practices across industry, practice groups, and department. Coach and develop team members, identifying developmental needs and mentoring or training to improve skills. Guide, direct and motivate the team, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance. Identify and develop best practices, establishing long-range objectives and the actions to achieve them. Position Requirements
4-year degree with major coursework in marketing, communications or related field required; Master’s degree preferred; industry certifications preferred. 15 years of progressive expertise in marketing and business development; substantial experience leading company-wide initiatives in a multi-office setting, preferably in a professional services firm. Strong business development abilities including prioritization, planning, organization, delegation, negotiation, budgeting and ROI analysis. Ability to motivate attorneys to engage in business development and to develop and implement business development plans. Experience providing high levels of client service to individuals at all levels of an organization. Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to produce compelling proposals, collateral, research reports and client-facing materials. Forward-thinking with demonstrated ability to deliver solutions to complex challenges; high level of maturity and confidence to interact with sophisticated clients. Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office; experience with business development and marketing technology and processes. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build consensus and excitement for initiatives; team-first approach with a track record of managing a large, geographically diverse team. Energetic, proactive, results-oriented, and client-service oriented; ability to adapt to shifting demands and opportunities. Strong leadership to guide and inspire the team; ability to manage change initiatives related to talent and people management. Knowledge of current legal market trends, news and innovations.
