Shift/Schedule: 11a-7p, every third weekend and holiday rotation
Department: Phlebotomy Reception
Salary Range: $17.79 – $26.65 hourly, based on experience and qualifications

About The Role
We’re looking for a dedicated Lab Support Specialist to join our team and help us continue delivering the level of care our patients and families deserve. In this role, you’ll be a vital part of our clinical team, ensuring excellent service, collaboration, and patient outcomes in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
You will perform phlebotomy techniques to obtain blood specimens on patients of all ages. The Lab Support Specialist will interpret and transcribe physician orders onto manual requisitions and into the computer Order Entry System. You will also perform all medically necessary activities required along with assisting in lab functions as required for proper specimen accessioning. Assist in training new employees. Assist in clerical functions of department.
What You’ll Do
- Patient Care: Recognizes age-specific requirements, determine safe blood volume to collect, and select appropriate devices. Work independently across services (in-house, outpatient collection stations, Urgent Care/Emergency Department, Cath Lab, and medical imaging). Monitor patients for adverse reactions and understand patient limitations for collection sites. Problem-solve unusual circumstances in patient care areas.
- Blood Specimen Collection: Perform all phases of phlebotomy with a high standard of accuracy. Select appropriate collection sites, follow correct order of draw, obtain proper labeling, maintain and process specimens. Troubleshoot collection and electronic equipment as needed.
- Accessioning: Perform accessioning in Laboratory Information System with accuracy. Triages specimens, reviews provider orders, and assists with missing information. Accepts orders by phone and fax; communicates results as required. Use critical thinking to resolve requisition issues.
- Communication: Provide information to technical staff regarding patient state, collection site, and expectations to ensure accurate results. Greet and identify patients appropriately and explain venipuncture procedures to ease patient anxiety.
- Time Management: Prioritize tasks considering order priority, patient condition, and provider requests. Adapt as needed.
- Client Services: Travel to offsite locations and courier specimens and supplies. Record collection data and communicate concerns to physician practices regarding specimen storage and processing.
- Deliver compassionate, patient-centered care aligned with Saratoga Hospital values.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support health, healing, and service excellence.
- Use hospital systems and tools to document care and support operations.
- Seek opportunities to improve processes and support patient and staff satisfaction.
- Serve as a positive, professional representative of the hospital and community.
What You Bring
- High school graduate or GED required. Prior phlebotomy experience preferred. Valid New York State driver’s license required. Must be at least 21 years of age and approved to drive Saratoga Hospital vehicles for shifts requiring travel for offsite specimen collection. Certification or eligibility with a recognized board of registry recommended.
