This position serves as a field program manager for a regional team by providing expert technical advice and exercising discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of industrial safety, fire protection, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, radiological safety, communicable diseases, hearing conservation, safety management systems, emergency planning, OSHA record keeping and reporting. Typical duties include planning and directing occupational safety and health program activities for assigned geographical areas. The Safety and Occupational Health Manager (SOHM) will mentor and communicate organizational priorities, reinforce deadlines, and assist Safety Specialists. The incumbent uses independent judgment to ensure technical solutions are appropriate and compliant with policy and program requirements. The role involves investigating and helping resolve safety and occupational health problems across a variety of environments, advising management on responding to employee allegations of unsafe or unhealthful conditions, OSHA investigations, employee injury investigations, union grievances, and unfair labor practices related to occupational safety and health issues and injuries. Individual Occupational Requirement: Experience in or related to safety and occupational health that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties. Qualifying experience includes managing safety or occupational health program elements, developing policy, applying safety and health laws and procedures, developing standards and procedures, reducing hazards, analyzing workplaces, training personnel, and related occupational fields such as industrial hygienist, safety engineer, fire prevention engineer, health physicist, or occupational health nurse. Experience at GS-13 level: 1 year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level, including evaluating hazards, advising management confidentially on unsafe or unhealthful conditions, developing mitigation plans, and collaborating with internal/external staff to promote safety and health.
