General Summary
The Medical Assistant supports clinical staff by performing delegated patient care tasks with professionalism, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, multitasks effectively, and demonstrates critical thinking.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Adhere to established safety protocols including infection control and safe patient handling. Escort patients to exam rooms, obtain vital signs, perform EKGs, and verify medication and allergy histories. Document patient information accurately and promptly in electronic health records. Manage phone communications, route messages, and assist with patient inquiries and test result follow-ups. Assist with medication renewals, authorizations, and administration (oral, IM, SQ) as ordered. Perform point-of-care lab testing and collect specimens for laboratory analysis. Schedule appointments, diagnostic procedures, and surgeries as directed by providers. Complete necessary paperwork including prior authorizations and referrals efficiently. Maintain exam room supplies and cleanliness, ensuring readiness for patient visits. Educate patients on electronic health record portals and assist with enrollment. Support orientation and training of new medical assistants. Demonstrate accountability, teamwork, and reliability in attendance and performance.
Education
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant or Medical Specialist program is required, or equivalent experience. A high school diploma is mandatory.
Experience
At least one year of experience as a Medical Assistant or related medical specialist is preferred. Experience in a clinical setting is advantageous.
Certification and Licenses
Certification as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from an accredited organization such as the American Medical Technologist (AMT) is preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required.
Mental and Physical Requirements
This position requires considerable mental focus and physical activity including lifting up to 35 pounds, frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
Working Conditions
Frequent exposure to infectious diseases and occasional encounters with hostile individuals may occur. Minimal physical discomfort is expected.
