Overview
School-Based Social Worker (Longterm Sub) (Anticipated Vacancy) (SY25-26) at Boston Public Schools. We are looking for a long-term substitute for an anticipated vacancy. This assignment covers for an employee on leave, effective immediately, and ends in March 2026. The hire will not be confirmed until the position is vacated. You may start the year as a Long-Term Substitute if the position does not become vacant by the start of the school year. Responsibilities
Coordinate and/or actively participate in the Student Success Team (SST). Collaborate with School Leadership to establish sustainable structures and partnerships; elevate the voice of students and families in problem-solving. Support the design of tiered interventions within an equitable Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS). Collect progress-monitoring data within Panorama and ensure interventions and services lead to desired outcomes. Model authentic relationship-building with students, families, school staff, and partnering agencies. Establish and monitor MTSS implementation (Tier 1, 2, and 3) in a way that does not pathologize students. Coordinate with SST members to ensure plans, progress monitoring, and assessment of interventions. Communicate goals and activities of the student support program to students, staff, and the community. Attend monthly professional development and participate in coaching and feedback from District Social Workers and leaders to ensure compliance with district policies and standards. Professional Practice and Collaboration
Provide individual and group counseling; may include IEP and non-IEP services; up to 10 individual sessions per week for students with IEPs as applicable. Provide Tier 2/3 interventions and conduct risk assessments when needed. Support crisis intervention at the school level in coordination with the district Crisis Team; assist with Suicide Risk Assessments and Threat Assessments. Consult on classroom climate strategies that promote social-emotional development and student engagement. Match students with appropriate services and coordinate follow-up with internal and external partners; serve as a case manager. Track and maintain data related to mental health partners and provide required reports. Performs other related duties as assigned by the School Leader or Program Director of Social Work. Qualifications – Required
Master’s Degree in Social Work or Counseling. MA DESE School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor license (All Levels). Licensed Social Worker (LCSW/LICSW) or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC); or eligible for license. Minimum of 3 years of urban-equivalent professional experience providing clinical services. Ability to meet BPS Standards of Effective Practice. Strong interpersonal skills to work with school, students, parents, and community-based agencies. Demonstrates understanding of racial equity and cultural humility; ability to engage in discussions about race and systems of oppression. Current authorization to work in the United States by first day of employment. Qualifications – Preferred
Prior experience as a school-based social worker. Knowledge of Special Education policies and procedures. Multilingual candidates are valued; BPS languages include Spanish, Haitian Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Somali, and others. Certification as a trainer in Safety Cares de-escalation and restraint (optional). Terms
