School-Based Social Worker (Long Term Substitute) (SY25-26) – Boston Public Schools. This is a long-term substitute position that is expected to start on 09/19/2025 and end on 01/05/2026. All substitute teachers are hired as per diem subs, even when placed in long-term assignments. Per diem pay applies to substitutes at the start. The Office of Social Work supports school-based social workers through consultation, professional development, and crisis response, with a regional support model that includes a District Social Worker and the Program Director of Social Work. Position Summary and General Responsibilities

Boston Public Schools seeks an exceptional School-Based Social Worker to support the implementation of behavioral health supports, including trauma response and recovery, healing, and resiliency-focused services that help students achieve their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally. In partnership with other BPS providers and external mental health partners, the Social Worker will support school communities through: Individual and group counseling and assessments Crisis intervention and response Managing a caseload and coordinating referrals to external agencies and programs Partnership with students and families The Social Worker participates in the Student Success Team (SST) and collaborates with school-based teams to monitor data, assess practices, and support MTSS implementation with culturally responsive approaches. The Social Worker will engage in professional development and receive coaching from District Social Workers, the Program Director of Social Work, and the Director of Student Support to ensure high-quality service delivery. Responsibilities

Coordinate and actively participate in the Student Success Team. Collaborate with School Leadership to establish sustainable structures and include student and family voices in decision-making. Support the design of tiered interventions within an equitable MTSS framework. Support progress monitoring data collection within Panorama to evaluate intervention outcomes. Model authentic relationship-building with students, families, school community, and partner agencies. Establish and monitor MTSS plans for students at Tier 1, 2, and 3 in a way that avoids pathologizing students. Collaborate with SST to ensure plans include progress monitoring and assessment of interventions. Communicate goals and activities of the student support program to students, staff, and the wider community. Professional Learning

Attend monthly professional development provided by the Office of Social Work on policies, practices, and evidence-based mental health topics. Possibly attend up to 9 of the 18 contractually required PD hours focused on mental health topics, with school-based hours determined by the direct supervisor. Direct Service

Provide individual and/or group counseling, including IEP and non-IEP services, with up to a recommended maximum of 10 individual sessions with students with IEPs per week when applicable; may serve on IEP/504 Teams. Provide Tier 2/3 interventions such as check-in/check-out and suicide/threat risk assessments. Conduct sociological assessments as part of Special Education eligibility processes and upload to Edplan in a timely manner; may include home visits. Support school-wide crisis intervention in collaboration with the district Crisis Team; assist with Suicide Risk Assessments and Threat Assessments. Consult on school and classroom climate strategies that support social-emotional development and engagement. Match students with appropriate services, coordinate referrals to external agencies, and monitor progress as a case manager. Track and maintain data related to mental health partners and services; provide timely monthly reports for the Office of Social Work. Perform other related duties as assigned by the School Leader or Program Director of Social Work. Core Competencies

Required

Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling MA DESE School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor License (All Levels) Licensed Social Worker (LCSW or LICSW) or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC); or eligible for the corresponding license Minimum of 3 years of effective clinical experience in an urban setting similar to BPS Ability to meet BPS Standards of Effective Practice Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with schools, students, families, and community agencies Understanding of racial equity and ability to engage in discussions about race, intersectionality, and systems of oppression Demonstrates cultural humility and self-awareness Current authorization to work in the United States by first day of employment Preferred

Prior work as a school-based social worker Knowledge of Special Education policies and procedures Fluency in one of BPS official languages (Spanish, Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Somali, etc.) Certification as a trainer in Safety Cares de-escalation and restraint (preferred) Commitment to family partnerships, belief in all students’ potential, respect for families, and ongoing learning Terms
