Overview

School-Based Social Worker (Long Term Substitute) (SY25-26) – Boston Public Schools. This is a long-term substitute position that is expected to start on 10/07/2025 and end on 03/01/2026. All substitutes are hired as per diem subs, even when placed in long-term assignments. Per diem rate applies to substitutes. Background and overview: The Boston Public Schools (BPS) is committed to providing every child with equitable, world-class education and supports social work services through a regional model. The Office of Social Work provides consultation, professional development, and crisis response, and aims to deliver high-quality, culturally responsive mental health support in all BPS schools. Responsibilities

Coordinate and/or actively participate in the Student Success Team (SST). Collaborate with School Leadership to establish structures and partnerships, elevating student and family voices in solutions. Design and implement tiered interventions that support the MTSS framework and equitable access to supports. Support progress monitoring data collection within Panorama in collaboration with staff to ensure interventions are effective. Model authentic relationship-building with students, families, school community, and partner agencies. In partnership with SST, monitor MTSS Tier 1, 2, and 3 interventions in a way that avoids pathologizing students. Ensure plans, progress monitoring, and assessments are in place for students referred to SST. Communicate goals and activities of the student support program to students, staff, and the community. Professional Learning and Direct Service

Attend monthly professional development provided by the Office of Social Work, covering department policies, evidence-based practices, and partnerships. May be required to attend professional development hours focused on mental health topics, with hours determined by the direct supervisor. Provide individual and/or group counseling, including IEP and non-IEP services, with a potential maximum of 10 individual sessions per week for students with IEPs; participate on IEP/504 teams as needed. Provide Tier 2/3 interventions (e.g., check-in/check-out, suicide and threat risk assessments). Conduct sociological assessments requested for Special Education eligibility processes, including possible home visits, and upload to EdPlan timely. Participate in crisis intervention with the district-wide Crisis Team; assist with Suicide Risk and Threat Assessments as needed. Consult on school and classroom climate strategies to support social-emotional development and engagement. Match students with appropriate services, coordinate follow-up, and serve as a case manager when needed. Track and maintain data related to mental health partners and services; provide required monthly reports. Performs other related duties as assigned by the School Leader or Program Director of Social Work. Core Competencies and Qualifications

Required: Master’s Degree in Social Work or Counseling; MA DESE School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor license (All Levels); Licensed Social Worker (LCSW/LICSW) or LMHC or eligible for those licenses; minimum 3 years of urban, clinical experience; alignment with BPS Standards of Practice; strong interpersonal skills; awareness of racial equity and cultural humility; U.S. work authorization by start date. Preferred: Prior school-based social work experience; knowledge of Special Education policies; multilingual candidates encouraged (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Somali); trainer certification in Safety Cares de-escalation and restraint; commitment to family partnership and equity values.
