Akima Systems Engineering (ASE) is seeking a 2nd Class Marine Electrician to work in Suffolk, Virginia. Responsibilities
Marine Electricians install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for a variety of purposes, including interior communications. Maintain and repair electrical systems on marine vessels. Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electronic equipment on board vessels and in shipyard facilities. Read and interpret schematics and blueprints; work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, work orders, technical documents, test documents, and related procedures. Layout, fabricate, and install electrical wiring, coaxial cable, or fiber optic installations onboard Navy vessels; perform cable removals and installations as needed. Install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify equipment and structures to support fleet modernization on US Navy surface ships. Test and inspect electrical systems to ensure conformance to specifications and safety procedures. Collaborate with supervisors and managers to maintain effective communications and relationships. Operate under supervision and seek guidance from a supervisor or higher-level technician as required. Qualifications
Must be a US citizen. Clearance: Must have a DoD Secret clearance or a recently granted Interim Secret clearance. Education: High school diploma, GED, or industrial/trade school certificate. Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment on-board Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, MSC, or maritime vessels; practical shipboard experience with HM&E systems. Must be familiar with one or more Interior Communications (IC) systems: MC, HYDRA, IVN, IVCN, SATCC, SIWCS. Must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check. Must be able to access government installations by obtaining and maintaining a DBIS credential to perform work on-board US Naval vessels or government assignments. Must be able to work overtime and weekends upon managerial request. Must be able to travel outside the Suffolk, Virginia area if required. Experience with Fiber Optic cables and multi-pin connectors; possession of or ability to provide trade-specific hand tools. Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively. Understanding of NSI 009-73 requirements (inspection, testing, installation, removal, and repair of shipboard electrical cabling and equipment; cable installations; grounding; and related tasks). Experience with electrical distribution systems and associated cabling; reading electrical drawings and schematics; safe use of multimeters and megohmmeters. Familiarity with NAVSEA Standard items. Current NAVSEA Multipin Connector Certifications (NSI 009-73) is highly preferred. Current NAVSEA Fiber Optic certification (NSI 009-123) is preferred. NAVSEA Cableway Improvement Program certifications are preferred. Vocational school or skilled trades certificate programs are preferred. Current or active DoD Secret clearance preferred. OSHA 10 Maritime Certification a plus. Microsoft Office knowledge is a plus. Physical Demands
Must be able to lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment and boxes (no less than 30 lbs as required by the job). Ability to work on and climb ladders, in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties in high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions; work aloft or over the sides of vessels; may ride ships at sea for extended periods.
