Position Summary Information Minimum Qualifications
The Department of Nursing is seeking applicants to fill one or more full-time, in-person 9-month positions with the following qualifications:
An earned doctorate in nursing or a closely related field and a commitment to excellence in teaching, research and service compatible with the BCHS mission.
Candidates who are in the dissertation stage of their terminal degree are eligible to apply if all degree requirements will be completed by July 31st.
Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)
Expertise providing education in adult medical-surgical and/or community/mental health courses preferred. A research trajectory with evidence of potential for grant writing and/or publication preferred.
One-year or more of full-time teaching experience in a baccalaureate or graduate nursing program preferred.
License/Certification Required Licensure as a registered nurse in good standing in North Carolina or a compact state; meeting the North Carolina Board of Nursing’s requirements for nurse educator.
Description of the Department or Unit The Department of Nursing
has around 250 students, which includes the pre-licensure BSN, the online RN to BSN, and the online MSN programs with a concentration in nursing education. The BSN, RN to BSN, and MSN programs are fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The Department will begin offering the DNP / Family Nurse Practitioner program in fall of 2025. Learn more at

Appalachian State University’s Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS)
is transforming the health and quality of lives of individuals, families, and communities through inclusive practices, interprofessional collaboration, and innovation in teaching, scholarship, service, and clinical outreach. The BCHS supports over 3,400 students in nine undergraduate and nine graduate degree programs, organized into six academic departments. The programs are located in Boone in the Holmes Convocation Center and the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, the cornerstone of Boone’s Wellness District. We also have a presence on our new campus in Hickory. The college supports the Appalachian Institute for Health and Wellness and has a collaborative partnership with the Wake Forest School of Medicine’s Physician Assistant Program and multiple health and human service agencies across the region. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The successful candidate’s responsibilities may include teaching in the classroom, clinical settings, simulation, or online in any of the degree programs offered in the Department of Nursing. Teaching may include supervision of capstone projects or other culminating projects. In addition, responsibilities include scholarship yielding publications/grants, service on committees, advising students, assisting with program evaluation/development, and participation in official activities of the Department, College, and University, among others. There are no online-only teaching positions within the Department of Nursing.

ABD with reduction in rank and salary:
ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate’s salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
No ABD consideration:
Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
