Job Summary
The Field Auditor will support the MBTA Railroad Operations (RROPS) Mechanical Department by auditing assets, monitoring maintenance practices, and ensuring compliance with safety and service standards. The Auditor reports to the Railroad Operations Mechanical Director and will address rolling stock condition, layover facilities, revenue service compliance, and corrective action for repairs. Duties & Responsibilities
Monitor and ensure compliance with the Commuter Rail Operating Agreement Services. Perform daily inspection checks on passenger service coaches and locomotives. Investigate customer service concerns and confirm contractor corrective actions. Respond to and investigate emergency conditions (e.g., derailments, accidents) and provide formal reports. Prepare written reports as needed. Assist with preventive maintenance inspection checks on passenger coaches and locomotives. Assist with the oil analytics lab and reporting program. Recommend capital funding programs for fleet reliability improvements. Identify corrective actions for fleet and facility maintenance issues. Prepare responses to technical issues. Measure the MBTA Commuter Rail Operator performance and effectiveness related to coach equipment. Drive to work sites to conduct inspections, investigations, and respond to emergencies. Respond to inquiries from customers, vendors, or co‑workers courteously and professionally. Respond to emergencies on a 24/7 basis. Adhere to Authority rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements, and policies including EEO, anti‑discrimination, anti‑harassment, and anti‑retaliation policies. Perform additional duties and projects assigned by the MBTA RROPS Mechanical Department. Minimum Requirements & Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.). One (1) year of experience with heavy or transit vehicle maintenance and inspections. Ability to use fleet management maintenance systems to track failures and maintenance actions. Working knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Effective organizational, analytical, time‑management, and multi‑tasking skills. Strong oral and written communication skills. Effective interpersonal skills. Excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills. Ability to provide internal and external customers with a courteous and professional experience. Experience working effectively with a diverse workforce. Valid U.S. driver’s license. Proficiency in English required for effective performance. Preferred Experience And Skills
Additional years of experience in a field auditing capacity. Hands‑on experience with MBTA legacy and new passenger coach equipment. Substitutions Include
Two (2) year technical or vocational training program, college degree program, high school vocational program, union apprenticeship, U.S. Armed Services training, or documented employer training may substitute for required work experience. Job Conditions
Commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area. Work all shifts and/or locations as assigned, including up to 24/7 hours per week for emergencies. Pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, comprehensive background screening, and medical or drug and alcohol screening.
