CDOC HVAC Supervisor Trainee (Correctional Officer I) – Buena Vista Overview CDOC has created a HVAC Supervisor Trainee Program to train individuals in correctional facility HVAC operations. This trainee position, classified as Correctional Officer I, provides on-the-job training while maintaining safety and security at the Buena Vista Correctional Complex. Upon successful completion, the trainee may advance to a CSTS I position.

Responsibilities

Maintain safety and security of facility and work sites.

Train and guide inmates in proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment, and chemicals.

Conduct work site searches, strip searches, and shakedowns.

Monitor workplace environment and inmate behavior, responding to emergencies such as fights, fires, and escapes.

Perform design, installation, adjustment, diagnostics, repair, and maintenance of new and existing HVAC and refrigeration equipment.

Provide technical expertise and oversight for DDC and microprocessor-based HVAC control systems.

Coordinate logistical support with other trades and shops.

Lead and supervise assigned inmate workers, training them in HVAC operations, monitoring progress, and ensuring timely completion of tasks.

Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations regarding refrigerants and testing standards.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.

Must be 18 years of age.

No felony convictions or domestic violence history.

Valid, unrestricted driver’s license.

Legally eligible to work in the United States.

Attainment of EPA 608 Certification (Type II, III or Universal) within one year of promotion to CSTS I.

Minimum 4 years of experience in building construction or HVAC maintenance, with at least 2 years combined with correctional experience.

Required Competencies

Strong work ethic, integrity and dependability.

Sound judgment and decision‑making skills.

Proficiency in operations of commercial/industrial washer and dryers.

Effective inventory maintenance and supply tracking.

Clear understanding of safe use of chemicals and sanitation processes.

Excellent communication with inmates individually and in groups.

Interpersonal skills and ability to inspire teamwork.

Ability to train, coach and mentor inmate workers for community reentry.

Self‑control, emotional stability and mental resilience under pressure.

Strong emergency response capabilities.

Ability to read and comprehend the English language.

Fluent oral and written English communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in installation, repair and maintenance of HVAC and refrigeration systems.

Experience in light building construction and preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance.

EPA 608 Certification (Type II, III or Universal).

Conditions of Employment

Must be 21 years of age.

Valid driver’s license; must maintain a safe driving record.

High school diploma or GED.

No felony convictions, including sexual abuse or domestic violence history.

Legally eligible to work in the United States; CDOC uses e‑Verify.

Successful completion of CDOC Basic Training and Defensive Tactics modules.

Physical ability to complete Defensive Tactics; must lift arms above head, stabilize another person, use strikes, and endure impact.

Visible exposure to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training.

Ability to see and hear to observe, address and respond to safety breaches.

Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and assignment.

Must be able to walk and climb stairs consistently.

TB screening required upon hire.

Must be able to travel and work various shifts.
