About the KIPP Colorado Special Education Teacher Role: The Special Education Teacher is the instructional leader of their student caseload and is directly responsible for driving student outcomes and creating an exceptional student experience. Teachers develop daily instruction aligned with our academic program that enables students to make significant academic growth each year. The Special Education Teacher plans instruction, organizes learning activities, internalizes and prepares for lessons, and implements with fidelity all accommodations and modifications for students’ IEPs, BIP’s, 504 Plans, and MTSS interventions. The role includes creating and cultivating a culturally responsive classroom community, upholding school-wide expectations, managing tier 1 behaviors, and contacting families proactively. The position is a 10-month academic position and is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position reports to a member of the school leadership team.

Role Responsibilities and Time Allocation

Professional Responsibilities Believe deeply in the mission, values, and Race, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (RIDE) commitments of KIPP Colorado Schools and that all children can and will learn Assume personal responsibility for student achievement Read, internalize, and adhere to the KIPP Colorado Policies and Procedures manual Provide an active presence, strategic supervision, and intentional monitoring to ensure student safety and engagement in rigorous learning Develop your craft through coaching sessions with a manager (1-2 times every 1-2 weeks as needed) and implement feedback Be prepared for lessons, meetings, coaching, PD, and communications Meet professional obligations including deadlines and schedules Leverage professional tools (Google and Microsoft Suite) Maintain strong attendance and punctuality Collaborate with colleagues and seek feedback for continuous improvement Reflect on professional practices and pursue development goals Participate in professional development, grade level and department meetings Engage in school-wide and org-wide professional development Be a positive, contributing member of teams and initiatives Share candid, solutions-oriented feedback with peers and leadership Assist with recruitment and engagement events Travel as needed across Denver-area campuses, home office, or PD events Assist with other duties as assigned (lunch duty, arrival/dismissal, etc.)

Special Education Responsibilities Develop, monitor, and evaluate special education programs and supports Maintain IEPs, 504s, evaluations, and ELL programs with fidelity Liaison with parents via trainings and meetings Provide case management for Special Education caseload and instruction for supported students Ensure accurate and timely completion of IEPs, BIPs, and FBAs Ensure minutes, accommodations, and modifications are delivered in collaboration with general education teachers Support classroom teachers in understanding student support plans

Instructional Planning and Delivery Develop standards-based unit plans and daily lesson plans Design and deliver rigorous, backwards-planned lessons Design assessments aligned to daily objectives Grade student work and provide feedback and support Plan rigorous lessons focusing on internalization Use the adopted curriculum with fidelity Use data to adjust short- and long-term plans to meet student needs

School Culture Alignment Maintain relationships with students and families based on trust and respect Approach practice with urgency to maximize instructional time Establish high expectations for academics and behavior Reinforce rules and consequences for a positive classroom Meet professional obligations and deadlines

Additional Responsibilities Active presence and strategic supervision to ensure safety and engagement Complete MLE coursework and certification requirements (as required) Partner with leadership to implement 504s, BIPs, IEPs, safety plans and accommodations Engage in outreach such as home visits and parent meetings Attend designated school functions outside of hours Support duties including bus, lunch, dismissal, chaperoning trips, and events Develop strong family relationships through communications and home visits Maintain accurate records and data tracking Participate in recruitment activities Other duties as assigned

Role Level and Qualifications Bachelor’s degree (required) Special Education License or TEE through CDE (required) Spanish bilingual (preferred) Ability to meet ESSA criteria (required) At least 2 years of teaching experience (highly preferred) Willingness to attend after-hours meetings and events Commitment to Exceptional Student Experience Commitment to diverse youth and inclusive practices Strong organizational, written and oral communication skills Ability to manage ambiguity in a fast-paced environment Proactive problem solver with teamwork Strong work ethic and enthusiasm
