Overview
The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of Colorado Department of Corrections' (CDOC) prison facilities throughout the state. Correctional Officers support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. Positions must cooperate with other staff members and work as a cohesive team, while managing a diverse inmate population. Positions maintain the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates. This posting will be used to fill vacant positions at our Canon City locations. The CO I position maintains safety and security of CDOC prison facilities. CO I staff communicate professionally with inmates, families, coworkers, supervisors, managers and the public; work as a cohesive team; and manage a diverse inmate population. Duties include, but are not limited to: Work directly with inmates in a locked facility; Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas; Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required); Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles; Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms; Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule; Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles; Monitor visiting areas; Conduct formal, informal, and emergency counts; Cross-check and maintain movement logs; Conduct searches for contraband (may include canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches); Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety, and sanitation standards; Inspect inmate mail and property; Respond to emergencies following established protocols; Follow tool and key control procedures and ensure proper storage and documentation; Attend roll call; Document incidents using established reporting practices; communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors. Positions may require working additional hours/shifts to maintain 24/7 facility safety and security. Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions Of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualification High School Diploma or a GED certificate. Conditions Of Employment Applicants must acknowledge and agree to Conditions of Employment within the application process. Must be at least 18 years of age; Possess a valid and unrestricted driver’s license; maintain a safe driving record per policy. Have no felony convictions and meet background investigation requirements; complete a health screening; and pass modules of the CDOC Basic Training, including Defensive Tactics. Willingness to work all shifts, weekends, holidays; may be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during training and on assignment; able to travel and transport inmates; TB screening required. Required Competencies Strong work ethic, accountability, integrity and dependability; Sound judgment and decision-making; Interpersonal and teamwork skills; excellent customer service and attention to detail; English reading, writing and verbal communication; Ability to observe and monitor inmate activity and environment; Ability to safely operate security devices, doors and firearms (as trained); Ability to perform searches and use security equipment; Ability to follow chain of command and safety protocols; Ability to respond quickly to emergencies and work in stressful, potentially violent situations; Willingness to work outside in inclement weather and adhere to Drug Deterrence Program; Self-control and emotional resilience; ability to communicate with inmate families and the public.
