Department Information The CDI is the consumer protection agency for the nation's largest insurance marketplace and safeguards all of the state’s consumers by fairly regulating the insurance industry. With annual direct premiums of $340 billion, California is the largest insurance market in the United States and the fourth largest insurance market in the world. Nearly 1,400 dedicated employees work at CDI to oversee more than 1,400 insurance companies and license more than 425,000 agents, brokers, adjusters, and business entities.
Job Summary Under the general direction of the Supervising Special Investigator I – Non‑Peace Officer (Supervising Investigator), incumbents perform insurance investigations relating to regulatory compliance and/or criminal investigations, including the enforcement of California and Federal laws related to the transaction of insurance. Some travel is required within and/or outside the state of California via private or public transportation. The position is designated under the Conflict of Interest Code and requires completion of a Statement of Economic Interest.
Responsibilities
Conduct insurance investigations relating to regulatory compliance and/or criminal activity.
Investigate potential violations of California Penal Code sections related to peace officer powers, such as arrests and execution of search warrants.
Travel within and outside California, including overnight stays, as required by investigative work.
Maintain detailed investigative reports and documentation.
Collaborate with law enforcement, other CDI divisions, and external partners.
Adhere to ethical and legal standards in all investigative activities.
Participate in special projects and task forces as assigned.
Perform data analysis with computer databases and produce findings.
Apply regulatory knowledge to support enforcement actions.
Qualifications
Strong aptitude for investigative work and regulatory compliance.
Proficiency with computer databases and software tools (Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Ability to analyze complex information and report findings clearly.
Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
Valid background check clearance and required supplemental questionnaires.
Experience with policy, regulation, or law enforcement is preferred but not required.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Honesty, integrity, and a commitment to public service.
Special Requirements
Background Investigation and Fingerprinting are required before hire.
CRSQ (Criminal Record Supplemental Questionnaire) must be completed.
