Job Description Under the direction of the Office Chief, Division of Safety and Management Services, the Staff Services Manager I serves as a subject‑matter expert for Caltrans’ laboratory health and safety. The incumbent designs, delivers, and evaluates employee health and safety processes, including communication, outreach, and evaluation for Caltrans Laboratories. They represent the Office of Employee Health and Safety, build rapport through transparent communication, and promote teamwork and cross‑functional collaboration to support Caltrans’ strategic goals.

Responsibilities

Serve as the go‑to expert on laboratory safety for Caltrans employees.

Develop, implement, and assess health and safety programs and procedures.

Communicate safety policies and procedures to employees through presentations, outreach, and documentation.

Collaborate with internal stakeholders to integrate safety practices into projects.

Conduct safety audits, incident investigations, and risk assessments for laboratory environments.

Provide training and guidance on chemical handling, hazardous materials, and emergency response.

Maintain accurate records of safety metrics, incidents, and compliance reviews.

Effectively adapt to changing regulations, industry standards, and best practices.

Qualifications & Eligibility

Eligibility for hire determined by the Staff Services Manager I examination.

New to state civil service employees must be on the state examination list.

Minimum Qualifications as specified in the Class Specification for Staff Services Manager I.

Ability to work across multiple environments—office, training rooms, and field settings—under varied weather conditions.
