Overview The Safety Investigator 1 role is part of the Minnesota OSHA program, working to prevent and reduce occupational injuries and illnesses through enforcement of occupational safety and health standards.
Hybrid telework is available after a 6‑month probation period. Employees within 50 miles of St. Paul must work in the office at least 50% of the time each month. 20% travel required; overnight travel may be needed.
Responsibilities
Identify, resolve, and document apparent violations and hazards during compliance inspections.
Write field investigation reports documenting findings of violations.
Perform follow‑up and referral investigations.
Identify and manage imminent danger hazards to ensure prompt corrective action.
Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of health and safety laws, regulations, standards, codes, and policies.
Represent MNSOHA and the agency in contacts with injured workers, employers, OSHA delegates, trade associations, and Federal OSHA.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
18 months professional occupational safety and health experience, including industrial hygiene sampling, interpretation and application of safety and health standards, and hazard identification and abatement.
Master's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Public Health, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field substitutes for 18 months of experience.
Bachelor's degree substitutes for 1 year of experience.
Communication skills sufficient to write technical reports and communicate to the public.
Math skills sufficient to calculate sampling times, volumes, concentrations, and averages.
Ability to use personal protective and testing equipment.
Ability to work indoors and outdoors, ascend ladders, and handle loud environments, transporting up to 20 lb.
Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of Minnesota and federal occupational health and safety standards sufficient to determine violations and assess penalties.
Knowledge of inspecting and auditing techniques to enforce health and safety provisions of OSHA.
Master's degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related field, OR
Bachelor's degree with 2 years of experience interpreting safety and health standards (e.g., safety manager, safety director, safety coordinator).
Completion of an approved apprenticeship program with 4 years of safety and health experience.
Associate’s degree in a related field with 4 years of safety and health experience.
Language skills other than English (Somali, Spanish, Hmong, Karen or ASL).
Additional Requirements Background investigation required; may include SEMA4 Records Check, Employment Reference Check, Driver’s License Check, Education/License Verification.
