Job Title Maintenance Mechanic Lead (2 positions)

Position Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic Lead is responsible for overseeing and coordinating maintenance, repair, and operational activities across campus facilities. This role incorporates the general responsibilities of HVAC, Groundskeeping, Health & Safety, and Building Maintenance leadership functions. The Lead serves as a working supervisor, providing technical expertise, assigning daily tasks, coordinating vendor activities, and ensuring a safe, efficient, and well-maintained campus environment.

This role also incorporates all responsibilities of the Maintenance Mechanic I and II positions, including preventative maintenance, general repair, and daily operational support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership & Coordination

Oversee daily assignments of the maintenance team and serve as first point of contact for escalated issues. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to staff in HVAC, building maintenance, grounds, and safety. Inspect all university buildings and grounds regularly; document findings and follow up on corrective actions. Coordinate with vendors and contractors to ensure work is performed per contractual requirements. Building Maintenance & Repairs

Perform and oversee preventative maintenance and repair on building systems, including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and structural components. Maintain records of building inspections, repairs, and work orders. Ensure compliance with safety codes, regulations, and university standards. HVAC Systems

Assist in inspection, repair, and maintenance of HVAC systems. Provide input on system performance, preventative maintenance schedules, and energy efficiency improvements. Support and train staff on proper HVAC maintenance and troubleshooting practices. Groundskeeping & Landscaping

Inspect and maintain university grounds, irrigation systems, and exterior spaces. Monitor and coordinate the work of landscaping vendors; ensure quality and contractual compliance. Recommend and oversee special landscaping projects to enhance campus appearance. Health & Safety

Inspect and maintain life-safety equipment (fire extinguishers, emergency lighting, alarms). Conduct safety inspections and ensure compliance with OSHA and university policies. Report and address safety hazards, coordinating with campus departments as needed. General Duties

Procure necessary parts, supplies, and equipment for projects and repairs. Act as primary contact for after-hours and weekend maintenance emergencies; subject to recall as needed. Collaborate with university departments to ensure effective communication and service delivery. Perform all tasks associated with Maintenance Mechanic I and II roles. Other duties as assigned. Education, Certifications and/or Licenses

High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification(s) preferred.

Experience

Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in facilities maintenance, including HVAC, building, and grounds work.

Knowledge of OSHA standards, building codes, and preventative maintenance practices.

Strong organizational skills with ability to lead and prioritize multiple tasks.

Ability to communicate effectively with staff, contractors, and campus community.

Ability to conduct inspections and maintain compliance records. Outstanding interpersonal skills with excellent customer service orientation. Ability to work effectively, diplomatically, and professionally with diverse constituencies. Strong judgment and prioritization skills. Strong organizational skills with attention to detail. Ability to maintain accurate inspection and compliance documentation. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Proficiency in reading and understanding instructions, blueprints, and schematics. Ability to develop and implement health and safety policies. Problem-solving abilities to address practical challenges in facilities and safety operations.
