Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager – EH&S, the Environmental Health and Safety Specialist has the main responsibility to determine the existence of possible health hazards (both medical and bio‑hazard) and to take steps to correct them. The role monitors health and safety conditions, medical and bio‑hazard waste management, and provides EH&S leadership, developing proactive approaches to safety. The Specialist conducts employee safety training, prioritizes and implements EH&S training projects to protect people, products and the environment from exposure to injury, risk or economic loss. They keep the facilities up to government standards, develop plans to reduce violations, and advise on state and federal regulations. The Specialist works within the HAZMAT response team, maintains hazard communications‑MSDS, and manages recycling and universal waste programs, fire drills, and emergency evacuations. Participant in incident analysis, recommends preventive corrective actions, and reviews policies for program improvement.

Essential Functions

Employees must abide by all Joint Commission Requirements, including sensitivity to cultural diversity, patient care, patient rights and ethical treatment, safety and security of physical environments, emergency management, teamwork, respect for others, ongoing education and training, communication and adherence to safety and quality programs, sustaining compliance with National Patient Safety Goals, and licensure and health screenings. Must perform all duties in accordance with hospital policies, Service Standards and Code of Conduct.

Lead by example through high compliance with health and safety policies, standards and regulations.

Promote safety and health awareness through training, safety‑environmental rounds, audits and site inspections.

Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations, laws, policies and procedures.

Report and manage unplanned, off‑site discharge of hazardous materials and wastes per policy.

Manage medical and bio‑hazard wastes per regulations.

Investigate incidents promptly and implement measures to prevent recurrence.

Manage universal waste and recycling programs.

Maintain hazard communications and MSDS records.

Conduct fire drills and emergency evacuations.

Support site personnel in meeting environmental objectives.

Coach and mentor employees, contractors and EH&S staff in risk assessments and hazard management.

Participate in regulatory, risk assessment and HAZMAT response teams.

Provide regulatory information to internal and external customers.

Maintain storage and retrieval of regulatory records.

Track emerging regulations and communicate impact to appropriate personnel.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Experience: 5‑7 years of progressively responsible, directly related work in healthcare health and safety program management and compliance. License/Certification: None.

Knowledge

Apply safety policies and procedures.

Strong interpersonal, communication, training and influencing skills.

Good organizational and project management skills.

Work effectively within a diverse environment and comply with safety regulations.

Knowledge of chemical synthesis and chemical control regulations.

Knowledge of OSHA 1910/1911.

Knowledge of health regulations and occupational/industrial health and safety.

Skills in hazardous materials management, “community right to know”, hazard recognition and risk management.

Additional Information – Pay Range

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary may be determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, location and internal equity. Typically, new members join at the minimum to mid salary range: $45.98 to $60.96 per hour.
