It safeguards and preserves the lives and property of its citizens through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. The department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision and other divisions such as Administration, Compliance & Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission, and Rehabilitation & Reentry.

Description of Work Salary Range: $37,782.00 – $66,120.00

Effective July 1, 2025, candidates meet the minimum qualifications if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. Knowledge, skills and abilities listed in the vacancy announcement are used as management preferences.

Responsibilities

Providing supervision for subordinate staff, conducting shift line‑up, making shift assignments, and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.

Completing, reviewing, and maintaining time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.

Accounting for persons and funds to ensure that all assigned equipment is operationally ready.

Assigning lower‑level custody staff to a particular area or post, overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security and welfare of offenders is maintained.

Arranging work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.

Management Preferences

Documented knowledge of Prisons' Policy and Procedures, and/or Facility Operations.

Work Schedule This is a full‑time position (40 hours per week). The selected candidate may be required to work any shift, including weekends and holidays, to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as Correctional Officer II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary special qualifications must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.

Note to Current State Employees State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected, a new salary will be recalculated considering relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. A pay increase may result.
