Assistant Permit Engineer (Permit Inspector) – Transportation Engineer (Civil)

Salary: $6,488.00 – $12,152.00 per month (Range D). New‑to‑state candidates will be hired at the minimum salary for the classification or alternate range when applicable.
Location: 1651 Union St., Eureka, Humboldt County.
Responsibilities
Review permit applications and coordinate reviews with internal and external stakeholders.
Execute, issue, inspect, and close encroachment permits throughout District 1.
Ensure compliance with traffic control requirements, regulations, statutes, and standards.
Attend and represent Caltrans at meetings on permit policies, procedures, and requirements.
Participate in the Local Development Review (LDR) process.
Assist the District Permit Engineer with other functions required of the Encroachment Permit Office.
Minimum Requirements See the Class Specification for detailed qualifications. In general, candidates should:
Hold a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers for Range D; not required for lower ranges.
Have knowledge of storm water practices including Caltrans Permit, General NPDES Permit, and local ordinances.
Possess a current Driver’s License.
Meet the Transportation Engineer (Civil) minimum qualifications (MQs).
Working Conditions The position is primarily office‑based in a climate‑controlled environment under artificial lighting. The employee may be required to travel and work outdoors in moderate to extreme weather and wildlife surroundings. Telework may be available at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s policy.
